Creation of the past: holidays, significant days and social memory

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá vytvářením minulosti pomocí svátků, významných dní a sociální paměti. Cílem této práce je prostřednictvím jednoho konkrétního významného dne a rituálu slavení s ním spojených ukázat, jak je ovlivňována a utvářená minulost skrze sociální paměť lidí. V mé práci bude tímto dnem 8. březen jako Mezinárodní den žen, a to hlavně proto, že v naší republice je tento den vnímán spíše negativně z důvodu jeho spojení s komunistickým režimem. Pro účely této práce jsem si vytvořila tři hlavní podoby slavení MDŽ v Česku v současnosti. První podobou je oslava v blízkém kruhu přátel a známých, druhou je oslava v socialistickém duchu a třetí je oslava s feministickou tradicí. Popisem jednotlivých typů oslav a jejich následnou analýzou, jsem došla k závěrům, které odpovídají na základní otázky této práce. Jlavní otázkou je pak otázka jestli je sociální paměť tak tvárná, aby i geenrace, které zažily komunismus na vlastní kůži, byly schopny vnímat MDŽ v jiném než komunistickém světle. Odpověď na tuto otázku je složitá, ale můžeme říci, že jedině vyrovnání se s minulostí může ovlivnit vnímání MDŽ mezi lidmi, kteří zažili komunismus. Celá tato práce čerpá z omezených zdrojl a z velké části z mých vlastních poznatků. Její závěry tedy nejsou obecnými generalizacemi, ale jen možným náhleden do dané problematiky.

Abstract:

This bachelor’s work deals with forming of the past with the help of celebrations, significant days and social memories. Its goal is to show, using one single significant day and its celebration rituals, how is the past influenced and formed through the peoples social memory. In my thesis, this significant day would be the 8 of March, the International Women’s Day, mainly because in the Czech Republic it is seen in a negative light due to its connection with the communist regime. For the purpose of my work I constructed, based on observations, internet materials and newspaper articles, three main forms of celebration of the International Women’s Day in the Czech Republic today. The first form of celebration is in a circle of friends, second form is a celebration in a socialistic spirit and the third and last form is a celebration in a feministic style. Describing every single form of celebration and their following analysis, have led to the conclusions, which are in answer to the main questions of this thesis. The main question is whether the social memory is as formable as for the generation that have experienced the communism, to be able to perceive the International Women’s Day in other but communist light. The answer to this question is difficult, but we can say, that only coping with the past can influence the perception of the International Women’s Day by the people who experienced communism. This work draws from limited sources of information and big part of the information also comes from my own experience, the conclusions are thus not a common generalizations but only a possible insight into the problem.
