English word formation with the focus on Latin morphemes (a survey of modern English)

Abstract:

The Industrial Revolution, which took place between the 18th and 19th century, brought with it significant progress and many new discoveries, which resulted in the need for new words. The new words were created using the process of borrowing, derivation or conversion. These types of word formation process have been described in the theoretical part, by elaborating literary sources from the perspective of linguistic studies. The main subject of the practical part of this thesis was observing the changes in chosen words through historical literary sources. Based on the obtained findings, ten words were selected, namely words: ambulance, battery, cereal, claustrophobia, generator, insulation, locomotive, nice, nuclear, vaccination, all of which have Latin origins. Selected words were analysed in terms of exact meaning in contemporary English, phonetic transcription, etymology, morphology, context, and diachronic corpus analysis, which represents a major part of the overall analysis of selected words. By comparing the obtained results, it was found that all the selected words were influenced by the complex history of the human population, which resulted in an occasional semantic change of the meaning in certain words (ambulance, battery, cereal, generator, nice). Historical influences were the most noticeable in the second half of the 20th century. This conclusion was drawn from the visibly decreasing frequency of the use of the words battery, generator, insulation, locomotive, and the increasing frequency of the words ambulance, cereal, claustrophobia, nice and nuclear. The word vaccination is an exception since it has a nearly constant frequency from the beginning of the twentieth century and demonstrates only a very slight decline.

Abstract:

V období od 18. do 19. století probíhala průmyslová revoluce, která přinesla řadu nových objevů a pokroků, což mělo za následek potřebu vzniku nových slov. Tato nová slova vznikala za použití procesů přejímání, derivace nebo konverze. Tyto procesy tvorby slov byly popsány v teoretické části prostřednictví zpracování literárních zdrojů z pohledu lingvistiky. Takto vzniklá slova lze sledovat v literárních zdrojích v průběhu historie, což bylo hlavním předmětem praktické části práce. Na základě obdržených poznatků bylo vybráno deset slov, konkrétně slova: ambulance (ambulance/sanitka), battery (baterie), cereal (cereální/cereálie), claustrophobia (klaustrofobie), generator (generátor), insulation (izolace), locomotive (lokomotiva), nice (pěkný), nuclear (nukleární), vaccination(vakcinace) s původem v latinském jazyce. Vybraná slova byla analyzována z hlediska výskytu v současné angličtině, fonetické transkripce, etymologie, morfologie, sémantiky a diachronické korpusové analýzy, která představovala hlavní část celkové analýzy zvolených slov. Porovnáním obdržených výsledků bylo zjištěno, že všechna vybraná slova byla ovlivněna komplexní historií lidské populace, přičemž u slov (ambulance, battery, cereal, generator, nice) došlo k sémantické změně významu. Historické vlivy se u všech slov nejvíc projevily v první polovině 20. století. Tento závěr byl vyvozen z viditelně klesajících frekvencí u slov battery, generator, insulation, locomotive a stoupajících tendencí u slov ambulance, cereal, claustrophobia, nice a nuclear. Výjimkou je slovo vaccination, které má od začátku dvacátého století téměř konstantní frekvenci s velice mírným poklesem.
