Teachers‘ subjective theories guiding their behaviour: a multiple case study in the context of teachers’ professional development

Abstract:

Záměrem disertační práce je ilustrovat na čtyřech zkoumaných případech učitelek občanské výchovy jejich subjektivní teorie týkající se smyslu a cíle vyučovacího předmětu a psychodidaktické transformace těchto cílů v příležitosti k učení žáků. Subjektivní teorie představují kognitivní struktury, které jsou relativně stabilní, a ačkoliv je jejich nositel nemá často verbalizovány a tudíž ani zvědomeny, podle zjištění výzkumu řídí jeho jednání ve výuce. Subjektivní teorie učitelek jsou v práci analyzovány v kontextu jejich profesního rozvoje. Výzkum subjektivních teorií učitelů v kontextu profesního rozvoje se zabývá mimo jiné zjišťováním dopadů rozličných intervencí v rámci profesního rozvoje učitelů, během kterých učící se své subjektivní teorie verbalizuje (ve výzkumu subjektivních teorií se užívá označení „rekonstruuje“), tím je může nahlédnout z perspektivy svého jednání a jeho účinnosti ve třídě. Právě na tuto linii výzkumu subjektivních teorií učitelů disertační práce navazuje, využívá jeho výsledky pro dosažení svého cíle a má ambici tento výzkum obohatit o dílčí doporučení. V teoretické části představuje disertační práce subjektivní teorie učitelů jako kognitivní struktury, jimiž subjekt dokáže vysvětlit (v retrognóze) své jednání, vč. úzce profesně zaměřeného jednání. O takovém jednání se lze laicky domnívat, že je řízeno znalostí. „Znalostí“ v úzkém slova smyslu, tedy něčím, co je podloženo teorií a učitelé si to osvojují během dlouhého přípravného studia na vysoké škole. Výzkum subjektivních teorií nahlíží kořeny jednání z široké perspektivy profesního rozvoje: to, co vytváří kognitivní pozadí lidského jednání, tento výzkum analyzuje vždy již v kontextu profesní dráhy, formálního a informálního učení subjektu, ale také z hlubší perspektivy osobnosti a „hlubokých přesvědčení“, která je možno nazvat konfirmačním zkreslením: ovlivňuje již nejen jednání, ale i to, jak daný subjekt chápe sebe, svůj životní smysl, perspektivu světa, v němž žije. Subjektivní teorie tohoto hlubokého druhu ovlivňují dokonce to, jak subjekt vnímá a vyhodnocuje konkrétní situace. To může vést až k přehlédnutí důležitých fakt a souvislostí, které neodpovídají subjektivním teoriím jejich držitelů. Podobně formují hluboké subjektivní teorie i myšlení daného subjektu týkající se i zcela jiných souvislostí. Výzkum subjektivních teorií tematizuje tento fenomén jako centralitu v rámci systému subjektivních teorií jedince. Disertační práce ji bude na vybraných případech ilustrovat. V metodologické kapitole vychází disertační práce z podrobné rešerše výzkumu subjektivních teorií (učitelů) a posouzení přínosů a rizik realizovaných metodologických postupů vzhledem ke kvalitě výzkumu, zejména reliabilitě a validitě. Disertační práce odpovídá na základě prozkoumání pojmu, obsahu a vědeckého výkladu subjektivních teorií v kontextu profesního rozvoje učitelů na následující výzkumnou otázku: Jak subjektivní teorie zkoumaných učitelek (v kontextu jejich profesního rozvoje) ovlivňovaly kvalitu jejich výuky a jaký měly dopad na atmosféru ve třídě a učení žáků? Výsledky disertačního výzkumu jsou organizovány do čtyř případových studií subjektivních teorií učitelek v kontextu jejich profesního rozvoje a také podmínek pro osobní a profesní rozvoj, jež jsou jim ve školách poskytnuty. Každá případová studie je organizována podle dílčích výzkumných otázek disertační práce, které byly vyvozeny z kategoriálního systému, který navazuje na tradici výzkumů subjektivních teorií. umožňuje díky vzorku učitelek shrnout v závěrečné fázi disertační práce poznatky případových studií také v dynamickém smyslu. Vzorek je utvořen dvěma velmi zkušenými učitelkami (15 a více let praxe), jednou se zhruba desetiletou praxí a současně s praxí výuky na vysoké škole a jednou učitelkou začínající. Ve shodě s výzkumem subjektivních teorií se ukázalo, že subjektivní teorie, které ovlivňují jednání učitelů, jsou zejména ty, které jsou z hlediska jejich systému subjektivních teorií centrální, jsou odvozeny z mnohaleté praktické reflexe, kterou učitelky shrnují do známé věty, „u mě to takto funguje“. Ve dvou případech zkoumaných učitelek utváří základ subjektivních teorií takové, které jsou odvozeny od jejich dlouhodobého, souvislého vzdělávání. Tyto centrální subjektivní teorie považují učitelky za „sebedefinující“, tvořící hodnotu samy o sobě. Takové subjektivní teorie je těžké proměňovat i v případě, že se ukáží jako problematické v praxi. Závěrečné diskuse a doporučení pro další výzkum jsou organizovány ve třech podkapitolách, které diskutují perspektivy dalšího rozvoje výzkumu subjektivních teorií učitelů. V případových studiích se ukazuje, že významným faktorem kvality a dalšího prohlubování subjektivních teorií jsou podmínky, které konkrétní školy svým učitelům poskytují v rámci podpory profesního učení. Tyto podkapitoly tedy proto analyzují příležitosti spjaté s tematizováním, verbalizováním a obohacováním subjektivních teorií učitelů v rámci jejich (1) počáteční profesní přípravy na vysoké škole a kurzů celoživotního učení; (2) mentorské personální podpory na pracovišti a (3) podpory společného učení se učitelů v rámci učících se komunit. Závěr disertační práce představuje syntetický model podpory učení se učitelů, který je realizován v projektu podpory učitelů, jejž autor disertační práce realizuje v manažerské pozici. Tento model profesní podpory autor disertační práce nabízí výzkumu subjektivních teorií učitelů jako možné východisko pro jeho další rozvoj.

Abstract:

The doctoral thesis presents four cases of civics teachers with the aim to illustrate their subjective theories concerning the meaning and goal of the subject taught and the psycho-didactic transformation of these goals into realised opportunities for pupils' learning. Although the bearer of subjective theories representing relatively stable cognitive structures is often unaware of them, they guide his/her approach to the educational process. The subjective theories of teachers are analysed in the context of their professional development. The research of subjective theories of teachers deals among other things with identifying the impacts of various interventions within teacher´s professional development on their behaviour and thinking. Within these the learner verbalizes his/her subjective theories (reconstructs them) and assesses them from the point of view of his/her conduct and its effectiveness in the teaching process. The doctoral thesis follows up on this line of research on subjective theories of teachers, uses research-results to achieve its goal and has the ambition to enrich the research field with partial recommendations. In the theoretical part the doctoral thesis presents the subjective theories of teachers as cognitive structures by which the subject can explain its actions (in retro-gnosis), including narrow professional conduct. From an uninformed point of view such behaviour may be driven by knowledge, "knowledge" in the narrow sense meaning something based on theory and acquired by teachers during a long preparatory study at a university. The research on subjective theories views cognitive roots of action from a broad perspective of professional development. The research analyses the source of cognitive background of human action not only in the context of career, formal and informal learning of a subject but also from a deeper perspective of personality and "deep beliefs" also known as confirmation bias, that affects not only actions, but also how the subject understands him/herself, his/her sense of life and the perspective of the world as such. Subjective theories of this profound kind influence the sub-situations themselves and their evaluation by the subject, which in given situations can lead to overlooking important facts and contexts that do not correspond to his/her subjective theories. Similarly, these form subjective theories of a given subject concerning completely different contexts. The doctoral thesis illustrates this phenomenon with selected cases. In the methodological chapter, the doctoral thesis draws on a detailed research on (teachers’) subjective theories and an assessment of risks and benefits of methodological procedures used in relation to research quality, especially reliability and validity. The doctoral thesis uses the comprehensive assessment of the concept and content of subjective theories in the context of the teachers’ professional development to define the main research question. How did the subjective theories of the researched teachers (in the context of their professional development) influence the quality of their teaching and what impact they had on the classroom atmosphere and pupils’ learning? The results of the doctoral research are described in four case studies of teachers' subjective theories in the context of their professional development. They are linked closely to the conditions for personal and professional development of teachers in the given schools. Each case study is structured according to the partial research questions of the doctoral thesis, which are based on a categorical system that follows the tradition of research on subjective theories. The case studies are followed by the presentation of results according to partial research questions across cases. Abstract:

o very experienced teachers with at least 15 years of experience, one with about ten years of experience and at the same time with teaching practice at a university and one novice teacher. The doctoral thesis findings confirm in all four cases the main findings of the previous research on subjective theories: the teachers' actions are especially influenced by those subjective theories that are central in terms of their system of subjective theories. It identifies them as derived from many years of practical reflection, which teachers summarize in a “familiar sentence” of: „I know this works for me”. Their systems of subjective theories “holds truth” to them. Two of the researched teachers’ subjective theories are based on their long-term, continuous education. The teachers consider these central subjective theories as being "self-defining", creating value on their own. Such subjective theories are difficult to transform even if they prove problematic in practice. The final discussions and recommendations for follow-up research split into three chapters, which discuss the perspectives of further development of the research on teachers' subjective theories. Case studies show that the conditions that particular schools provide to their teachers, in terms of professional learning support, are important factors of quality and possible deepening of subjective theories. Therefore, the discussions concern the opportunities associated with thematising, verbalizing, and enriching teachers' subjective theories (1) in their initial and life-long college training; (2) mentoring in the workplace and (3) in teachers’ learning communities. The conclusion of the doctoral thesis represents a synthetic model of support for teachers’ professional development, which is implemented in the project of teacher´s support managed by the author. The author of the doctoral thesis offers this model of a professional support to the research of teachers’ subjective theories as a possible starting point for its further development.
