Biological assessment of conventional and more species-rich roadside meadows using butterflies as an indicator taxon

Abstract:

Denní motýli (Rhopalocera) byli využiti jako vhodný indikační taxon pro hodnocení nově zavedených alternativně osetých luk na D47 u Studénky na Novojičínsku. Abundance motýlů na alternativně osetých loukách byla následně srovnána s abundancí na konvenčně osetých loukách. Hlavním účelem studie bylo zjistit, jaký ekologický potenciál mají alternativní ? vegetačně druhově bohatší louky a zda existuje rozdíl v druhové rozmanitosti či v abundanci denních motýlů na nich přítomných oproti konvenčním loukám a zda má na abundanci motýlů vliv charakter seče. Dále podat literární přehled výsledů zahraničních průzkumů s obecným záběrem na stále populárnější metody evaluace zemědělských krajin aplikované na hodnocení stanovišť u nás i v Evropě pomocí bezobratlých jako bioindikátorů. Zkoumáno a vzájemně srovnáváno bylo celkem 6 lučních stanovišť tří rozdílných habitatových typů: dvě konvenčně oseté louky, sečené; dvě alternativně oseté louky, sečené a dvě alternativně oseté louky, nesečené na východní straně silnice. Průzkum byl proveden během vegetačního období roku 2014, kdy byla stanoviště navštěvována jednou za měsíc, od května do srpna. Po dobu 30 minut bylo každé stanoviště prozkoumáno pochůzkou za průběžné evidence přítomných druhů denních motýlů. Metoda hodnocení kvality biotopů uskutečněná podle zastoupení denních motýlů byla provedena na základě provázanosti hodnocených charakteristik: stanoviště - rostlina - vzácnost v ČR. Výsledky prokázaly interakci mezi managementem a abundancí denních motýlů v sezóně. Abundance během vegetační sezóny klesala průkazně rychleji u alternativního managementu než u konvenčního. Dále se potvrdila hypotéza, že na alternativních loukách bude oproti konvenčním loukám abundance motýlů větší. Závislost druhů na kosení a na managementu nebyla průkazná.

Abstract:

In this thesis, butterflies (Rhopalocera) were chosen as suitable indicator taxon for evaluation of the newly implemented, more species-rich meadows along roadside D47 near Studénka in Novojičínsko district. The butterfly abundance on more species-rich meadows was then compared to the butterfly abundance on conventional meadows. The aims of this thesis are following: first to detect the ecological potential of alternative - more species-rich meadows, secondly to find out whether there´s a difference in the species diversity or in the butterfly abundance between those and conventional meadows. Lastly, to find out if the butterfly abundance is influenced by the character of mown. Another aim of this thesis is to bring the literature review of the foreign researches results with the focus on the increasingly popular methods of evaluation of the agricultural landscapes applied on the evaluation of the sites in Czech Republic and the rest of Europe using invertebrates as bioindicators. Six different meadow sites were researched and consequently compared. Three different habitat types were included: (1) two conventionally seeded and mowed, (2) two alternatively seeded and mowed meadows and (3) two alternatively seeded and non-mowed meadows on the eastern side of the road. The research was conducted during the growing season of the year 2014, during which every site have been visited once a month between May and August. Every habitat was investigated for thirty minutes in order to register the butterflies species present at the meadow. The method chosen for assessment of the quality of the habitat using ratings of presence of the butterfly species was based on following interrelated characteristics: site, plant and rarity of the butterfly species in Czech Republic. The research proved interaction between meadow management and abundance of the butterfly species in the growing season. Abundance decreased during the growing season significantly faster in the case of alternative management than the conventional one. Also, following hypothesis was confirmed: there is a higher abundance of butterflies on the alternative meadows than on the conventional meadows. The dependence of butterflies on the mowing of meadows and its management has not been proved.
