Women as Independent Actors in Ancient Rituals: Verification of Agency Theory on Case of Thesmophoria

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá ověřením agency theory, jejíž upravená verze byla představena Joan Breton Connellyovou v díle Portrait of a Priestess: Women and Ritual in Ancient Greece. Tato teorie je ověřována na případu Thesmoforií slavených v 5. stol. př. n. l. na území Athén. Pomocí literárních záznamů bylo zjištěno, že pokud by měla být agency theory nápomocná při interpretaci nezávislého jednání v antickém kultu, je nutné ji zbavit feministických konotací. Při užití agency theory je důležité důsledné kontextuální studium. Tudíž užití agency theory v případě interpretace archeologických nálezů bez přihlédnutí k literárním záznamům je nevhodné. Kritická část je věnována otázce jaký přínos může mít agency theory pro zjištění antických vztahů, a které její části jsou pro religionistické poznání problematické.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis follows up verification of agency theory, whose modified version was presented by Joan Breton Connelly in her work Portrait of Priestess: Woman and Ritual in Ancient Greece. The verification of agency theory was realized on the case of Athenian Thesmophoria festival, which had taken place in 5th century BC. Based on studies of literary records was found out, that if agency theory should be helpful in interpretation of independent acting in ancient cult, it has to be cleared of feministic connotation. Detailed contextual studies are significant aspect for the application of this theory. Therefore using of agency theory in the case of interpretation of archeological finds without looking at literary record is inappropriate. The critical part deals with the question of possible contribution of agency theory for more appropriate interpreta-tion/understanding of ancient gender relations and which parts of agency theory are problematic in the field of the study of religions.
