Causes of internal migration between original and new federal states

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na příčiny vnitřní migrace mezi původními a novými spolkovými zeměmi. Cílem práce je identifikace příčin vnitřní migrace mezi východním a západním Německem a pochopení trendu migrace ve směru východ-západ a západ-východ. Od doby znovusjednocení do roku 2013 převažovala migrace ve směru východ-západ, přičemž v tomto směru byly zaznamenány dvě migrační vlny, a to v roce 1991 a 2001, ke kterým došlo především z důvodu nárůstu nezaměstnanosti na východě Německa. Od roku 2013 převládá migrace ve směru západ-východ, a to z důvodů zlepšení ekonomické situace na východě, trendu suburbanizace a zpětné migrace. Přestože se situace na východě celkově zlepšila, stále se zde nacházejí rozdíly mezi oběma částmi země, které působí jako příčiny migrace. Trh práce na západě Německa působí jako pull faktor, jelikož nabízí vyšší příjmy a nižší míru nezaměstnanosti než východní část země. Dalšími zkoumanými příčinami, které přispívají k přetrvávající migraci z východu na západ, jsou celkově horší výsledky zkoumaných indikátorů kvality života na východě a nižší počet vysokých škol a prestižních univerzit v této oblasti.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis focuses on the causes of internal migration between the original and new federal states. The aim of the thesis is to identify the causes of internal migration between Eastern and Western Germany and to understand the trend of migration from East to West and West to East. Since reunification until 2013, migration from east to west has predominated, with two migration waves in this direction recorded in 1991 and 2001, mainly due to rising unemployment in Eastern Germany. Since 2013, migration from west to east has prevailed, driven by improvements in the economic situation in the east, suburbanization trends, and reverse migration. Although the situation in the east has improved overall, there are still differences between the two parts of the country that act as causes of migration. The job market in Western Germany acts as a pull factor, offering higher incomes and lower unemployment rates than the eastern part of the country. Other examined factors contributing to the persistent migration from the East to the West include generally poorer outcomes of the analyzed quality of life indicators in the East and a lower number of universities and prestigious colleges in this area.
