Applying for High School Education at United World Colleges

Abstract:

Cílem bakalářské práce bylo zjistit, co je hlavní motivací uchazečů pro vycestování na zahraniční školy. Celá práce se zabývá záměrně vybraným vzorkem respondentů ze specifického prostředí United World Colleges. Teoretická část se věnuje popisu a objasnění vzniku mezinárodních škol se specifickým zaměřením na United World Colleges a program International Baccalaureate. Názorně je představeno fungování přijímacího řízení v České republice o stipendia ke studiu na školách United World Colleges. Dále se věnuje specifikům, která ovlivňují uchazeče z pohledu psychosociálního a osobnostního vývoje, během tohoto rozhodování. Praktickou část tvoří kvalitativní výzkum studentů ucházejících se o stipendia na mezinárodní školy United World Colleges a kvantitativní šetření zaměřující se na činnost výběrové komise. Výsledky ukazují, že uchazeči o stipendium jsou motivování touhou po poznání a mezi jejich přednosti je komunikativnost a otevřenost čelit novým výzvám.

Abstract:

The aim of the bachelor thesis was to investigate the main motives of students to leave their home country for international schools. The paper focuses on a deliberately selected sample of respondents from the specific environment of the United World Colleges.. The theoretical part is devoted to description and clarification of the development of international schools with particular focus on United World Colleges and the International Baccalaureate programme. Scholarship admission process to United World Colleges for students from the Czech Republic is also explicitly explored. Moreover, the thesis focuses on specificities, which influence decisions of the scholarship applicants from psychological and personal development point of view. The practical part is composed from a qualitative research of the sample of scholarship applicants for United World Colleges and a quantitative survey that was focused on the functioning of the selection committee. Results illustrate that scholarship applicants are significantly motivated by their thirst for knowledge and among their predominant qualities are communication skills, openness and ability to face new challenges.
