Depiction of Asian-American culture in American Film

Abstract:

Thesis examines the portrayal of Asian American culture and its depictions in several Hollywood movies across the 20th and 21st centuries. While doing so, it considers the discrimination towards Asian and Asian-American minorities, including the rejection of Asian-American actors and actresses for the leading roles, and Hollywood's customary reduction of the complexity of depiction of Asian nations and cultures through negative stereotypes. Among examined negative stereotypes, terms such as "Kung-Fu sifu", "Lotus Blossom" or "Craven Villain", commonly used in the early Hollywood era, emerge. Nevertheless, the discriminatory legacy directed at Asian and Asian American minorities continues to appear even in modern productions. Thesis analyses the depictions of Asian and Asian American minorities in chosen films throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. The aim of the thesis is to determine whether the depiction of Asian-American culture in the 21st century has moved forward from the biased depiction of the 20th century to a more authentic one.

Práce zkoumá zobrazení asijsko-americké kultury a její zobrazení v několika hollywoodských filmech napříč 20. a 21. stoletím. Zvažuje přitom diskriminaci asijských a asijsko-amerických menšin, včetně odmítání asijsko-amerických herců a hereček do hlavních rolí, a obvyklé hollywoodské polehčování zobrazování asijských národů a kultur použitím negativních stereotypů. Mezi zkoumanými negativními stereotypy se objevují termíny jako "Kung-fu mistr", "Lotosový květ" nebo "Zbabělý darebák", běžně používané v rané éře Hollywoodu. Diskriminující praktiky cílené na asijské a asijsko-americké menšiny se však nadále objevují i v moderní produkci. Práce analyzuje zobrazení asijských a asijsko-amerických menšin ve vybraných filmech v průběhu 20. a 21. století. Cílem práce je zjistit, zda se zobrazení asijsko-americké kultury v 21. století posunulo od zaujatého zobrazení 20. století kupředu k více autentičtějšímu.
