Security of operating systems using fuzzy approach

Abstract:

This thesis extends current trends in automation of computer security by decision-making support for which the fuzzy approach is used. It is focused especially on the security of operating systems and its main objective is transfer of responsibility for this security on the operating system users. This is achieved by two proposed methodologies which are used to perform a security audit and hardening of current operating systems. The methodology for the audit deals with the assessment of the existing operating system to what degree is secure. It can be also used for identification which areas in the operating system have problems with security. In addition this methodology resolves the limitations of current approaches that are connected with users. This includes gathering of input information for the audit process from users which are not experts in computer security and the interpretation of final results of the audit to these users. The methodology for the hardening deals with the recommendation of appropriate security measures for the existing operating system and their specific configuration settings. It also covers customization of the security policy of the mandatory access control mechanism, for which are recommended particular policy variables, if this mechanism is implemented of course on hardened platform of operating system. Both of the proposed methodologies are applied and tested on MS Windows platform and are supported by fuzzy tool that has been created for verification these methodologies in a production environment. For the automation of individual processes and steps of these methodologies it was proposed the structure of interconnected expert systems that is called fuzzy network. During the audit process of MS Windows operating system is assessed security for three audit areas, for which was created particular models. The first audit area represents user account for which the physical security is assessed. Second area represents event log and the third area represents disk drive. During the hardening process of MS Windows is secured user account against physical threats. This process may and also uses shared knowledge base with the audit process. Customization of security policy is a part of the hardening process of the operating system. It is demonstrated and tested for generic FTP service policy of SELinux mechanism on the GNU/Linux platform.

Abstract:

Dizertačná práca rozširuje súčasné trendy, ktoré sú v automatizácii počítačovej bezpečnosti o podporu rozhodovania. Zameriava sa predovšetkým na bezpečnosť operačných systémov a túto problematiku približuje ich používateľom. Navrhuje metodiky, prostredníctvom ktorých je možné uskutočniť audit a zabezpečenie pre dnešné operačné systémy, pričom pre podporu rozhodovania využíva fuzzy prístup. Metodika pre audit sa zaoberá posudzovaním do akej miery je existujúci operačný systém bezpečný a identifikáciou oblastí, ktoré v ňom majú problém s bezpečnosťou. Okrem toho v súvislosti s ľudským používateľom rieši nedostatky súčasných prístupov týkajúcich sa získavania vstupných dát a interpretácie výsledkov auditu. Metodika pre zabezpečenie sa zaoberá odporúčaním vhodných ochranných opatrení pre existujúci operačný systém spolu s prispôsobovaním bezpečnostnej politiky pre jeho mechanizmus povinného riadenia prístupu ak je na danej platforme implementovaný. To sa vzťahuje aj na odporúčanie konkrétnych konfiguračných nastavení pre jednotlivé ochranné opatrenia a premenné tejto bezpečnostnej politiky. Navrhnuté metodiky sú aplikované a testované na platforme MS Windows a sú podporené grafickým fuzzy nástrojom, ktorý bol implementovaný za účelom ich overenia v praxi. Pre automatizovanú realizáciu jednotlivých procesov a krokov týchto metodík bola navrhnutá štruktúra tzv. fuzzy siete. Počas auditu operačného systému MS Windows sa posudzuje bezpečnosť troch oblastí. Fyzická bezpečnosť používateľského účtu, bezpečnosť denníka udalostí a bezpečnosť diskovej jednotky. Počas zabezpečovania operačného systému MS Windows sa zabezpečuje pred fyzickými hrozbami používateľský účet, čím sa preukazuje, že znalostná báza pre audit môže byť použiteľná aj pre zabezpečenie operačného systému. Prispôsobovanie bezpečnostnej politiky pre mechanizmus povinného riadenia prístupu, ktoré je súčasťou metodiky pre zabezpečenie operačného systému je demonštrované a je otestované pre generickú SELinux politiku FTP servera na platforme GNU/Linux.
