Perspectives of Australian Security in Relation to the Region of South-East Asia

Abstract:

Bachelor thesis examines issues of Australian security perspectives given the region of Southeast Asia. It aims to answer whether there exist any relevant evidence about securitization of future military conflict threat within region from Australian point of view, while using military expenditures data as share of GDP and military acquisitions. Work briefly presents priorities of security policy, alliances and quasi-alliance ties and describes the potential of states in the region to harm interests or even to threaten Australian territory. Thesis also contains a definition of SE Asian region, which is based on classical security complex theory and attention is paid to the Australian Defence Force, as well. Finally, author discusses the potential and motivations of the most likely opponents by applying the offensive neorealism theory of international relations.

Abstract:

Bakalárska práca sa zaoberá problematikou bezpečnostných perspektív Austrálie vzhľadom na región Juhovýchodnej Ázie. Jej cieľom je zodpovedať otázku, či existujú relevantné dôkazy o hrozbe budúceho vojenského konfliktu v regióne z austrálskej strany, k čomu sú využité údaje o výdavkoch na obranu ako podielu z HDP a zbrojné akvizície. Práca zbežne predstavuje priority bezpečnostnej politiky, aliančné aj kvázi aliančné väzby a opisuje potenciál jednotlivých štátov regiónu poškodiť záujmy či dokonca územie Austrálie. Ďalej práca obsahuje vymedzenie samotného regiónu JV Ázie, pričom táto definícia vychádza z teórie klasického bezpečnostného komplexu a pozornosť sa v neposlednom rade upiera i na samotné austrálske ozbrojené sily (Australian Defence Force). Na záver autor rozoberá potenciál a motivácie najpravdepodobnejších protivníkov aplikujúc teoretické poznatky tzv. ofenzívneho neorealizmu.
