Effective Learning Environment for Cybersecurity Hands-on Training

Abstract:

Osvojení kybernetické bezpečnosti vyžaduje komplexní znalosti a dovednosti. Prohloubit tyto znalosti a dovednosti vyžaduje praktické školení, které umožní naučit se, jak zmírnit kybernetické hrozby. Poskytování výukového prostředí, které napomáhá zvýšení zkušeností studentů z tréninku je pro vzdělávání stěžejní. Vytvoření efektivního výukového prostředí, které využívá pokročilé techniky k nalezení vhodné metody výuky a eliminace možností podvádění, je však složitý úkol. V této práci je proto zkoumána problematika založená na adaptivním učení kybernetické bezpečnosti a automatizovaném generování personalizovaných odpovědí pro každého účastníka tréninku. V této práci jsou zkoumány tři hlavní oblasti. Nejprve je popsáno prostředí KYPO Cyber Range Platform (KYPO CRP) a jeho možnosti pro efektivní praktický výcvik. Zde se práce zaměřuje na sběr dat (události webového portálu a volání z příkazového řádku) a případy užití ve výukovém prostředí KYPO CRP. Dalším záměrem práce je návrh a implementace adaptivních výukových technik, které každému studentu přiřadí vhodné výukové návaznosti. Podpora takové funkce vyžaduje nový format výuky umožňující různé návaznosti výuky a model tutora přiřazující vhodné úlohy. Třetí důležitou částí efektivního učení je odhalování a eliminace podvodů během tréninku. Toho je dosaženo návrhem technik automatického generování úloh, které pro každého studenta sestaví odlišné odpovědi na každou úlohu. Všechny tyto části byly vyhodnoceny na případových studiích s desítkami studentů. Hlavní přínosy této práce byly (již) publikovány ve sbornících z konferencí a v časopisech. Nakonec byly všechny publikované výsledky začleněny do produkční verze volně dostupného zdrojového kódu platformy KYPO CRP, což může komunitě usnadnit zvládnutí navržených postupů.

Abstract:

Learning cybersecurity requires comprehensive knowledge and skills. To increase such knowledge and skills needs, practice using hands-on training that can learn how to mitigate cyber threats. Providing a learning environment that increases the students' experience from such training is crucial for such education. However, providing an effective learning environment that uses advanced techniques to adapt the learning path or mitigate the cheating possibilities is a complex task. Therefore, the thesis investigates topics related to adaptive learning in cybersecurity hands-on and automated problem generation for generating personalized answers for each participant of hands-on training. We address three main areas. First, we describe a KYPO Cyber Range Platform (KYPO CRP) environment and its capabilities for effective hands-on training. Here, the focus is on parts for data collection (web portal events and commands from the command line) and use cases in the KYPO CRP learning environment. Second, we focus on designing and implementing adaptive learning techniques that assign suitable learning paths for each student. Supporting such functionality requires a new training format allowing different pathways through the training and tutor model assigning suitable tasks. Third, an important part of effective learning is detecting and mitigating cheaters in training. This is achieved by proposing automatic problem-generation techniques that generate different answers for each student for each task. All of these parts were evaluated using case studies with dozens of students. Overall, the main contributions of this thesis were published in conference proceedings and journals. Finally, all published results were integrated into the production release of open-sourced KYPO CRP, which can ease the community's adoption and acceptance of the results.
