Abstract:

Autor práce se zaměřuje na lingvistický jev, který pojmenovává Geek Principle of communication (Nadšencův princip spolupráce), z amerického sitcomu Teorie Velkého Třesku (The Big Bang Theory), jehož tvůrci jsou Chuck Lorre a Bill Prady. Hlavní hypotézou je, že aby dosáhli zvýraznění postav a změny ve struktuře humoru, rozhodli se autoři scénáře vybavit Sheldona a Amy, dvě seriálové postavy, modifikovaným principem komunikace; je-li tento princip konfrontován s běžným (Griceovým) Principem spolupráce, který užívají ostatní postavy, vzniká zvláštní druh nefunkční komunikace. Hlavní hypotéza je rozpracována do tří hypotéz pracovních. První z nich se soustředí na důkaz, že instance nefunkční komunikace nejsou vytvářeny náhodně, ale telickou modifikací Principu spolupráce. Tak je postulován Nadšencův princip, jako modifikace Griceova Principu spolupráce; modifikace je dosaženo vložením telického prvku do jinak atelického Principu spolupráce. Tímto prvkem, jehož působením jsou poznamenány všechny konverzační maximy Nadšencova principu, je akademická přesnost, kvazivědecká metoda předkládání důkazů a maximalizované nároky na informační hodnotu. Druhou pracovní hypotézou je, že tato modifikace konverzačního chování z postavy "nadšence" (AJ geek) dělá v očích publika asociálního jedince. Autor ve shodě s Bermanem tvrdí, že v sitcomu jsou preferovány dobře socializované postavy. Není-li tedy postava schopna konverzačně fungovat v rámci Principu spolupráce, který je běžným standardem komunikace, jedná se o autorský záměr, jímž autoři scénáře chtějí tuto postavu publiku prezentovat jako asociální. Třetí pracovní hypotéza zní, že jakmile je Nadšencův princip použit, mění se i struktura humoru v dané scéně z typu napětí–pointa na typ podvráceného očekávání, který může být humorný s každou další replikou v dialogu, ne jen jako vyvrcholení v závěru celé scény. Co se struktury práce týče, jsou druhá, třetí a čtvrtá kapitola (které následují po úvodu, v němž jsou prezentovány hypotézy) zaměřeny teoreticky a věnují se jevům, které byly v souvislosti s Principem spolupráce pojmenovány od doby jeho první formulace. Po uvedení a okomentování samotného Principu spolupráce a souvisejícího pojmu "nenaturální význam" ve druhé kapitole se autor věnuje kritickým pohledům na problematiku v kapitole třetí, počínaje Lecerclovým "Principem zápasu" a Lumsdenovými vrstvami komunikační spolupráce konče. Tento postup vede k uznání klíčovosti implikatury, nebo její možnosti, pro konverzační spolupráci, která nezávisí na vnějších okolnostech komunikace. Ve čtvrté kapitole se autor věnuje diskuzi nejrůznějších souvisejících pojmů, kterými byl pojem implikatura za čtyři desetiletí své existence rozšířen, a krátkému přehledu systémů, které na Griceově systému stavěly – Hornovu, Levinsonovu a Teorii relevance. V páté kapitole je nejdříve představen sitcom The Big Bang Theory. Poté následuje formulace Nadšencova principu komunikace coby modifikace Griceova Principu spolupráce. Autor užívá předem prodiskutovaných termínů k analýze souboru vzorků konverzací z daného sitcomu, přičemž se zaměřuje na místa, kde je nejednotností použitých konverzačních principů narušena funkčnost páru implikatura–inference. V šesté kapitole autor rozebírá dva důsledky, kterými použití Nadšencova principu překračuje rámec jazyka. Nejprve je pozornost věnována mechanismu, kterým je na základě lingvistického fenoménu (rozpor mezi Principem spolupráce a Nadšencovým principem) konstruována identita postav jako špatně socializovaných až asociálních jedinců v očích diváků. itím Nadšencova principu a tomu, jak se v návaznosti na tuto strukturu mění i vzorce humornosti daných scén. Je poukázáno na rozdíl mezi typickou anekdotickou strukturou napětí–uvolnění (poenta) a strukturou nedorozumění v analyzovaném sitcomu. Předešlé poznatky jsou ještě jednou shrnuty v závěru; jsou zmíněny i další dva sitcomy, v nichž by bylo možné provést analýzu modifikovaného konverzačního chování. Autor přikládá korpus přepisů scén a CD s videoklipy analyzovaných scén.

Abstract:

In this thesis, the author studies a linguistic phenomenon occurring in a US sitcom, The Big Bang Theory by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady – a phenomenon he terms the Geek Principle of communication. The main hypothesis is that in order to achieve character distinction and change in humor structure, the sitcom screenplay writers choose to equip the characters of Sheldon and Amy with a modified principle of communication, which, when faced with the usual Cooperative Principle used by other characters, gives rise to a specific type of miscommunication. The main hypothesis is divided in three working hypotheses. The first focuses on proving that the miscommunication is not created randomly, but by Cooperative Principle maxim telic modification. The Geek Principle is postulated as such modification of Grice's Cooperative Principle; the basis of modification lies in adding a telic element into the otherwise atelic Cooperative Principle. The added goal, which results in modified conversational maxims of the Geek Principle, is academic precision, science-like method of argument supporting, and maximized requirement of informativeness. The second working hypothesis is that such modification of conversational behavior establishes the geek character as socially awkward. Based on Berman, the author claims that sitcoms prefer social approvability. Turned around, if a character is unable to communicate in compliance with the usual standard (the Cooperative Principle), it is the screenplay authors' technique used to make the audience perceive such character as a weirdo. The third working hypothesis is that when the Geek Principle is used, the structure of humor of the given scene changes from the build-up – punch-line scheme to the subversion-of-expectation scheme, producing humorous effect as often as each turn, not just as a climax of each scene. As for the structure of this work, in the second, third and fourth chapters theory is discussed, that has been produced in connection or in reaction to the Cooperative Principle since the time of its first formulation. After introducing and commenting on the Principle itself (and on the related notion of non-natural meaning) in Chapter 2, critical opinions are addressed in Chapter 3, including different levels of cooperation in communication as presented in Lumsden and modified Principle of Struggle by Lecercle. This leads to establishing the implicature, or the possibility of implicature, as the most prominent element of linguistic cooperation, whatever the extralinguistic setting. Chapter 4 deals with the proliferation that the term implicature has seen during the four decades since its formulation, and with a very brief overview of the systems that have tried to build upon Grice, namely Horn's, Levinson's and Relevance Theory. In Chapter 5, The Big Bang Theory sitcom is introduced first. The Geek Principle of communication is then formulated as a modification of Grice's Cooperative Principle. The author uses the previously discussed terminology to analyze sampled conversational excerpts from the sitcom, showing how implying/inferring stops functioning when each speaker uses a different conversational principle. In Chapter 6, two effects of the Geek Principle are discussed that surpass the level of language. Firstly, it is discussed how letting a character use the Geek Principle makes the audience perceive them as asocial. Secondly, the humor patterns of Geek Principle caused misunderstanding are studied and the consequent impact on the resulting humor structure of the scenes. It is shown that the pattern differs from the typical situational build-up – punch-line type of humor. The author sums up the previous findings in Conclusion, adding names of two other TV series with an analytical potential for similar analysis. The author also encloses the series Transcript Corpus and a CD with The Big Bang Theory video excerpts.
