Motives of student engagement amongst non-traditional students at Masaryk University

Abstract:

Thesis is focused on motives of nontraditional students who are beginning their university studies and it is written within the theoretical framework of academic engagement. The inquiry into motivation of nontraditional students to engage into university education consisted in a secondary analysis. The data for the secondary analysis proceeded from the first part of a longitudinal online survey conducted on the first year Masaryk University students. Measurement instrument used in the original research was the questionnaire Academic Motivation Scale. Contrary of the original continuum of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, the factor analysis of nontraditional students´ responses showed a new structure of their motivational profile when entering university. Following the results of this study, nontraditional students are in their engagement driven by epistemic, professional and identitary motivation. The correlation analysis revealed a correlation of epistemic and identitary motivation on the age of nontraditional students, whereas the work-based motivation is negatively correlated with the age of nontraditional student´s children.

Abstract:

Diplomová práca skúma motívy netradičných študentov pri vstupe do univerzitného štúdia využívajúc teoretický rámec akademického angažovania. Motivácia netradičných študentov k angažovaniu sa do štúdiu bola zisťovaná na základe sekundárnej analýzy. Dáta pre sekundárnu analýzu pochádzali z 1. vlny longitudinálneho šetrenia študentov prvých ročníkov Masarykovej univerzity. Meracím nástrojom bol v zdrojovom výskume využitý dotazník Academic Motivation Scale. Oproti pôvodnému kontinuu vnútornej a vonkajšej motivácie faktorová analýza odpovedí netradičných študentov ukázala na novú štruktúru motivačného profilu týchto študentov pri ich vstupe do štúdia. Netradiční študenti sú podľa získaných výsledkov v angažovaní sa do štúdia poháňaní epistémickou, profesijnou a identitárnou motiváciou. Korelačná analýza navyše odhalila závislosť epistémickej a identitárnej motivácie na veku netradičných študentov, zatiaľ čo v prípade profesijnej motivácie bola zistená negatívna korelácia s vekom detí netradičných študentov.
