Na začátku 20. století došlo ke konfrontaci mezi dvěma pojetími historiografické metody - realismu a pozitivismu. Pekař se těsně před první světovou válkou zapojil do tzv. sporu o smysl českých dějin. Jeho oponenta Masaryka zajímala přítomnost, u ní začínal. In the early 20th century there was a confrontation between two concepts of historiographical methods - realism and positivism. Before the First World War Pekař was involved in the so-called dispute over the meaning of Czech history. His opponent Masaryk was since the beginning interested in presence.
