EXAMINING THE EFFECT OF COVID-19 PANDEMIC ON CONSUMER PURCHASING POWER IN AN EMERGING ECONOMY: A CASE OF GHANA

Abstract:

Covid-19 způsobil smrt milionů lidí a ovlivnil zdraví milionů lidí po celém světě. Pandemie ovlivnila činnosti firem a domácností, které vytvářejí příjmy na celém světě. Vzhledem k významnému dopadu pandemie na blahobyt na celém světě, se tato práce snaží prozkoumat vliv Covid-19 na spotřebitelskou kupní sílu v rozvíje-jících se zemích. Výzkum se zaměřil na Ghanu. Studie se zaměřila na období od dubna 2020 do dubna 2023. Cílem výzkumu bylo vyhodnotit opatření na omezení růstu, která zavedla ghanská vláda za účelem řízení Covid-19; analyzovat vliv pan-demie Covid-19 na kupní sílu spotřebitelů v zemi; určit opatření, která byla zavedena vládou s cílem ochránit spotřebitele před následky pandemie; zjistit, jaký vliv měla tato opatření na kupní sílu spotřebitelů. Studie zjistila, že vládní opatření na ochranu zahrnovala povinné nošení ochrany úst a nosu na veřejnosti, izolaci a karanténu, sociální odstup, dopravní omezení, uzavírky a zákaz vycházení. Výzkum ukázal, že tato opatření nebyla dodržována kvůli nízké úrovni příjmů, která nutila lidi pracovat navzdory zákazům vycházení, které neumožňovaly sociální kontakt. Výzkum zjistil, že vláda zavedla stimulační balíček, který zahrnoval dotace na vodu, potraviny a elektřinu; finanční podporu malým a středním podnikům a daňové úlevy. Ke stanovení statistického účinku Covid-19 a fiskální odezvy byla použita regresní analýza pomocí běžných nejmenších čtverců. Výsledky regrese ukázaly, že Covid-19 a vládní fiskální podpora neměly statisticky významný vliv na kupní sílu spotřebitelů. Práce dospěla k závěru, že úvěry byly ve sledovaném období využívány k vyrovnávání spotřeby.

Abstract:

Covid-19 caused the death of millions and affected the health of millions of people across the world. The pandemic affected the income-generating activities of firms and households across the globe. Because of the significant impact of the pandemic on the welfare across the globe, the current thesis sought to examine the effect of Covid-19 on consumer purchasing power in emerging countries. The research focused on Ghana. The study focused on the period from April 2020 to April 2023. The objectives of the research were to evaluate the containment measures put in place by the government of Ghana to manage the Covid-19 pandemic; to analyze the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic on consumer purchasing power; to determine the measures put in place to cushion consumers from the effects of Covid-19 by the government; and to determine the effect of these measures on consumer purchasing power. The study found that the government containment measures included mandatory masking while in public, isolation and quarantine, social distancing, traffic restrictions, lockdowns and curfews. Research showed that these measures were not adhered to because of low-income levels which forced people to work despite the lock downs and congestion in dwelling areas which did not allow for social distancing. The research established that the government had implemented a stimulus package that included subsidizing of water, food and electricity; financial support to small and medium-sized enterprises; and tax breaks. Regression analysis using ordinary least squares was used to determine the statistical effect of Covid-19 and the fiscal response. The regression results showed that Covid-19 and government fiscal support did not have a statistically significant effect on consumer purchasing power. The thesis concluded that credit was used to smooth consumption during the period under review.
