Referential Importance: Investigation Based on Quantitative, Intuitive Judgement, Lexicogrammatical and FSP Approaches

Abstract:

Tato dizertace se zabývá pojmem referenční významnosti, který představil Wallace Chafe (1994, str. 88ff.). Podle tohoto konceptu může být referentu přisouzen jeden ze tří stupňů významnosti: primární, sekundární nebo triviální. Chafe jej především užívá pro podporu hypotézy o omezení na lehké podměty (LSC), která tvrdí, že jako podměty se v angličtině pravidelně vyskytují pouze lehké referenty. „Lehké“ jsou ty referenty, které mají nízkou referenční významnost a/nebo aktivační výdaj. Chafe koncept referenční významnosti pouze nastiňuje. Hlavním cílem disertace je tedy rozšířit lingvistické povědomí o tom, jak se v diskurzu etabluje a jak je vyjádřena lexikogramaticky. Dociluje toho prostřednictvím několika výzkumných směrů: kvantitativního (významnost etablovaná frekvencí výskytu), intuitivního posouzení (významnost, jak ji intuitivně vnímají čtenáři/posluchači), formy prvního referenčního výrazu (jak jsou více či méně významné referenty vyjádřeny, když se poprvé objeví v diskurzu) a syntaktické pozice (např.: významnější referenty jsou častěji vyjádřeny jako podměty). Druhým cílem disertace je prozkoumání referenční významnosti ve spojitosti s teorií funkční větné perspektivy (FSP). Zde se výzkum zaměřuje na otázku, zda se významnost referentů odráží v tom, jakou FSP funkci zaujímají ve chvíli, kdy se poprvé objeví v diskurzu. Dizertace také užívá tohoto srovnání k určení, zda LSC věrně popisuje jazykovou realitu. Jsou předloženy důležité příklady, u kterých byl zjištěn nesoulad s LSC. Tyto příklady naznačují, že je nasnadě formulace LSC pouze jako tendence, a ne jako pravidla. Zkoumání referenční významnosti ve vztahu k FSP je také příspěvkem k porovnávání a nacházení styčných bodů mezi různými teoriemi informační struktury.

Abstract:

The dissertation investigates the concept of referential importance as introduced by Wallace Chafe (1994, p. 88ff.). The concept posits that a referent can acquire one of three degrees of importance: primary, secondary, or trivial. It is primarily used by Chafe to support the light subject constraint (LSC) hypothesis, which proposes that only light referents regularly appear as subjects in English. By “light” is meant such referents that have low referential importance and/or activation cost. Chafe merely outlines the concept of referential importance. The dissertation’s primary aim is therefore to expand a linguist’s understanding of how importance is established in discourse and expressed lexicogrammatically. The dissertation does so by following various lines of research: quantitative (importance established by frequency of occurrence), intuitive judgement (importance as intuitively perceived by readers/listeners), form of first referring expression (how more or less important referents are expressed when they first appear in discourse) and syntactic position (e.g., more important referents occupy the subject position more often). The second aim of the dissertation is to investigate referential importance with respect to the theory of functional sentence perspective (FSP). The focus here is on the question of whether a referent’s importance is reflected in the FSP function it assumes when it is first introduced into the discourse. The dissertation also uses this comparison to determine whether the LSC hypothesis accurately describes linguistic reality. Significant counterexamples to LSC are offered, suggesting that the LSC needs to be viewed merely as a tendency, rather than a rule. The investigation of referential importance in relation to FSP is also a small contribution to an effort of comparing and finding common ground between different theories of information structure.
