Very British Problems or Britské Trable: Reader Survey and a Proposed Translation of Selected Aspects and Challenging Parts

Abstract:

Cílem této diplomové práce je návrh překladu problematických pasáží a vybraných jevů v knize Very British Problems od Roba Templa, která je tvořena primárně tweety. Nejen nezvyklý formát, ale také specifické britské reálie z této knihy činí problematické dílo k překladu. Naše řešení stavíme na funkční teorii překladu a teorii skoposu. V rámci diplomové práce byl proveden čtenářský výzkum v podobě dotazníku, který sloužil jako nástroj pro vytvoření profilu modelového čtenáře a také pro potvrzení námi stanovených hypotéz. Diplomová práce předkládá tezi, že ač je kniha velmi specifická, je možné uvažovat o jejím překladu.

Abstract:

The goal of this diploma thesis is to propose a translation of selected aspects and challenging parts of the book Very British Problems by Rob Temple, which primarily consists of tweets. This book can be seen as challenging for translation, mainly because of the unusual format and also because of numerous culture-specific realia. Our arguments are based on the functionalist theory of translation and on the skopos theory. We have also conducted a reader survey which served as a tool for creation of the model reader and also for verification of our claims. Even though this book is very specific in many aspects, it can be argued it is possible to offer a translation of such literature.
