Using literature to teach politeness theory

Abstract:

The first section of the thesis provides a summary of the core concepts of the current available research on the face and politeness and an illustration of how this theory can be used to identify undesirable conduct and make the necessary adjustments using a personal experience. In the second part I will attempt to illustrate and explain core concepts of face and politeness theory using examples from the novel Burmese Days by George Orwell, as well as determine how the behaviour and relationships of certain characters is influenced and motivated by their 'face' and how their perception of it may develop throughout the novel.

Abstract:

První část této práce obsahuje shrnutí nejdůležitějších konceptů teorie zdvořilosti a teorie 'tváře' obsažených v současně dostupném výzkumu těchto teorií. Dále obsahuje ukázku, jak lze této teorie využít při identifikaci nevhodného chování a jeho potřebné úpravě pomocí osobní zkušenosti. Ve druhé části jsou základy těchto teorií ilustrovány a vysvětleny pomocí příkladů z novely George Orwella Barmské dny a také zjišťuji do jaké míry jsou vztahy mezi určitými postavami a jejich chování ovlivněno jejich 'tváří' a jak se vnímání jejich tváří vyvíjí v průběhu děje této novely.
