Religious life in Japan in the eyes of Barbora Markéta Eliášová and Joe Hloucha

Abstract:

V bakalářské diplomové práci se zaměřím na srovnání vybraných historických cestopisů a literárních děl od Joe Hlouchy (Sakura ve vichřici a Vzpomínky na Japonsko) a Barbory Markéty Eliášové (Rok života mezi Japonci a kolem zeměkoule), kteří se významně podíleli na šíření povědomí o japonské kultuře v českém prostředí první poloviny 20. století. Předmětem analýzy budou vybrané práce obou autorů, kteří osobně navštívili Japonsko a své zkušenosti zpracovali do podoby literárních děl, ale také popularizačních aktivit a cestopisů, v nichž pojednávají o náboženském životě v Japonsku. V práci se v návaznosti na současné diskuse o definici „náboženství“ v Japonsku, zaměřím na otázku, jak oba autoři vnímají a prezentují „náboženství“ Japonska ve svých cestopisech. Nakolik je obraz japonských náboženství spjat s dobovými diskurzem a nakolik se v něm odráží osobní zkušenost autorů, případně jak tato zkušenost proměnila očekávání a představy autorů. Objasním zde, jaké kategorie autoři používají pro uchopení „náboženství“ Japonců a jak jej přibližují českému publiku. Součástí práce bude i otázka vnímání šintoismu a buddhismu jako „náboženství“, zda tyto tradice rozlišují a s pomocí jakých témat je uchopují. Práce přispěje k poznání vývoje českých diskurzů o japonské kultuře a náboženství. Analýzou přístupu cestovatelů k náboženství chci přispět k poznání západních pohledů na šintoismus a buddhismus, kdy předpokládám, že se v cestopisech odráží jejich implicitní definice náboženství založené na křesťanství.

Abstract:

In my bachelor's thesis, I will focus on the comparison of selected historical travelogues and literary works by Joe Hloucha (Sakura in the Storm and Memories of Japan) and Barbora Markéta Eliášová (Year of Life among the Japanese and around the Globe), who significantly contributed to raising awareness of Japanese culture in the Czech environment of the first half of the 20th century. The subject of the analysis will be selected works of both authors who personally visited Japan and elaborated their experiences in the form of literary works but also popularization activities and travelogues dealing with religious life in Japan. Following the current scholarly debates on the definition of “religion” in Japan, I will focus on the question of how both authors perceive and present the "religion" of Japan in their travelogues. To what extent is the image of Japanese religions connected with contemporary discourse and to what extent does it reflect the personal experience of the authors? How this experience changed the expectations and ideas of the authors? Here I will explain what categories the authors use to grasp the "religion" of the Japanese and how they bring it closer to the Czech audience. The work will also include the question of the perception of Shintoism and Buddhism as a "religion", whether the authors distinguish these traditions, and through which topics they grasp them. The work will contribute to the knowledge of the development of Czech discourses about Japanese culture and religion. By analysing travellers’ approaches to religion, I want to contribute to the knowledge of Western views on Shintoism and Buddhism, where I assume that travelogues reflect their implicit definitions of religion based on Christianity.
