Why All This Fuss about Public Breastfeeding? Breastfeeding in Feminist Theory

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se věnuje fenoménu kojení (a především kojení na veřejnosti) z aspektu feministické teorie. V první části práce je na základě sociálně - konstruktivistického a dekonstruktivistického přístupu k genderu rozebíráno nejprve obecné pojetí kojení ve vztahu k lékařskému diskurzu, konstrukci mateřství a normativní kategorii „dobré matky“, jak jej analyzují feministické autorky. Ve druhé části pak na základě feministické analýzy normativní (hetero)sexuality a samotného sexu práce zodpovídá otázku, proč se o kojení na veřejnosti tolik mluví (?). Odpověď založená na feministickém pojetí odkazuje především na narušování hranic mezi mateřstvím, které je spojováno s „čistotou“ a obrazem Panny Marie, a sexualitou, která konotuje spíše obraz děvky nebo ženy - sexuálního objektu, který není určen pohledu veřejnosti (ale pohledu muže v soukromí). Mimo dualitu mateřství - sexualita pak práce také rozebírá dichotomii „diskrétního kojení“, které je jako jistá improvizace na veřejnosti tolerována, oproti „exhibicionismu“, který se zdá členům společnosti nemravný a neakceptovatelný. Z hlediska genderu totiž opět odkazuje k sexuálnímu, které je v rámci konstrukce normativní heterosexuality vyhrazeno výhradně muži. V závěru práce je uvažována samotná reflexe kojení ve feministické teorii, která je opět odkazována na dekonstruktivistický přístup a také praktické zkoumání různých zkušeností žen s kojením.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis is concerned with breastfeeding (and foremost breastfeeding in public) in feminist theory. The first part of the thesis analyses the general idea of breastfeeding concerning the medical discourse, the structure of motherhood and the normative category of a “good mother“, from the social-constructivist’s and deconstructivist’s attitude to gender as feminist authors analyze it. The second part, based on the feminist analysis of the compulsory (hetero)sexuality and sex itself, answers the question why all this fuss about public breastfeeding (?). The answer based on the feministic attitude particularly refers to blurring the boundaries between maternity, which is associated with the “purity” of Virgin Mary, and sexuality, which rather connotes the image of a hooker or a woman – the sexual object, which is not meant for the sight of the public (but the sight of a man in privacy). Apart from the duality of motherhood – sexuality, the thesis also analyses the dichotomy of “discreet breastfeeding”, which is tolerated by the public as a certain mean of improvisation, in comparison with “exhibitionism”, which appears immoral and unacceptable to the public. From the gender standpoint, again, it refers to sexuality, which is in terms of the structure of compulsory heterosexuality destined entirely to men. In conclusion of the thesis, the reflection of breastfeeding in feminist theory itself is considered, and again it is referred to the deconstructivist’s attitude and also to practical research of diverse experience of breastfeeding women.
