Ota Šik and his Importance for the Czech Economics

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na českého ekonoma Otu Šika a na jeho význam pro české ekonomické myšlení. Cílem práce je položit důraz na komparaci různých názorů na osobnost Oty Šika s ohledem na ekonomické reformy a významná díla. Práce je rozdělena do tří částí. Úvodní část se zabývá jeho životem, který byl zásadní pro formování jeho ekonomických a politických postojů a myšlenek a znázorňuje, jaký vliv měla tehdejší společnost na vývoj Oty Šika. V další části se práce snaží přiblížit politicko-historický kontext (od 50. let až do 60. let 20. století) a věnuje se ekonomických a politickým aktivitám Oty Šika a poukazuje na rozdílné názory ostatních ekonomů. Součástí práce je analýza nejznámější koncepce tzv. třetí cesty a charakteristika období tzv. Pražského jara, kde Ota Šik patřil k hlavním protagonistům ekonomických reforem. Závěr vypovídá o jeho působení a tvorbě v exilu, obsahuje výsledky shrnutí rozboru děl z předchozích kapitol.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis focuses on the Czech economist Ota Šik and his significance for the Czech economic thinking. The aim of this work is to put the emphasis on comparing different opinions on the personality of Ota Šik with regards to economic reforms and important works. The thesis is divided into three parts. The introductory part deals with his life, which was essential for the formation of his economic and political attitudes and ideas and shows what influence had the former society on Ota Šiks´ progression at that time. In the next part the thesis tries to describe the political-historical context (from the 50s to the 60s of the 20th century) and focuses on the economic and political activities of Ota Šik and points out on different opinions of other economists. Part of the work is analysis of the most famous conception so called "Third way" and the characteristic of the period so called "Prague Spring", where Ota Šik belonged to the main protagonists of the economic reforms. The conclusion part tells about his activity and creation in exile, includes results of the summary of works analysis from previous chapters.
