Slaughter and Animal Cruelty in Roald Dahl's Works

Abstract:

The aim of this Master’s Diploma Thesis is to analyse and compare examples of slaughter and animal cruelty issues in the selected children’s works by the British writer Roald Dahl. The first part of the thesis portrays Dahl’s life, the most significant events, his collection of literary works, and the definition of the terms of slaughter and animal cruelty with respect to their technical terms. The second part of the Master’s Diploma Thesis then focuses on the analysis of three selected children’s stories – i.e. The Magic Finger, The Twits and The Big Friendly Giant, with regard to the concept of slaughter and animal cruelty. Finally, the thesis offers a discussion about the impact these instances observable in the actions of the main characters might leave on Dahl’s young readers, and especially, on the shaping of their consciousness about animal welfare.

Abstract:

Cílem této magisterské diplomové práce je analyzovat a porovnat příklady související s tématikou zabíjení a násilí na zvířatech ve vybrané dětské literatuře britského spisovatele Roalda Dahla. V první části práce je vylíčen Dahlův životopis, nejdůležitější události spisovatelova života, jeho kolekce literárních děl, a objasnění pojmů zabíjení a násilí na zvířatech s ohledem na jejich technické výrazy. Druhá část magisterské diplomové práce pak zkoumá tři vybraná díla – Kouzelný prst, Prevíti a Obr Dobr, vztahující se na koncept zabíjení a týrání zvířat. Na závěr, práce nabízí diskuzi o možném dopadu těchto příkladů pozorovatelných v jednání hlavních postav na Dahlovi mladé čtenáře, a obzvláště na formování jejich vědomí o zvířecím blahobytu.
