The role of an Occupational Therapist in the area of sexuality - Sexuality and Sexual Functioning in Men living with a spinal cord injuries

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce je zaměřena na úlohu ergoterapeuta v oblasti sexuality muže po poškození míchy. Cílem této práce je zjistit, zda jsou muži po poranění míchy informováni ergoterapeutem o možnostech využití kompenzačních pomůcek v oblasti sexu. Dalším cílem je zjistit, která profese z multidisciplinárního týmu bude jako první oslovena jedincem po poranění míchy za účelem poradenství v oblasti sexuality. Pro získávání infomací byl použit kvantitativní výzkum metodou dotazníkového šetření. Teoretická část popisuje poranění míchy a dopady na fyzickou a psychickou stránku jedince. Vzhledem k tomu, že pro úspěšnou komprehenzivní rehabilitaci je důležitá spolupráce multidisciplinárního týmu, jsou popsáni jednotliví členové a jejich intervence. Dále jsou rozebrány důsledky, ve formě kterých se poranění odráží na mužské sexualitě, a možné intervence ergoterapeuta v této oblasti. Zmíněny jsou i kompenzační pomůcky, které může ergoterapeut doporučit.

Abstract:

The Bachelor thesis focuses on the role of the occupational therapist in the area of sexuality in men after a spinal cord injury. The objective of the present thesis is to determine whether men are informed by the occupational therapist after the spinal cord injury about the possibilities of using compensatory aids in the area of sex. Another objective is to discover which profession in a multidisciplinary team is first to be approached by an individual after spinal cord injury to receive advice on sexuality. Information was obtained through quantitative research, using the questionnaire survey method. The theoretical part delves into the spinal cord injury and its impact on the physical and mental aspects of the individual. As collaboration of a multidisciplinary team is important for a successful comprehensive rehabilitation, this part gives a description of individual members and their interventions. Furthermore, the consequences of spinal cord injury for male sexuality and possible interventions of the occupational therapist in this area are discussed. A mention is made also of compensatory aids that can be recommended by the occupation therapist.
