Analysis of the impact of economic freedom on gender pay gap

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá vztahem mezi ekonomickou svobodou a mzdovými rozdíly žen a mužů (tvz. gender pay gap) v zemích OECD v letech 2010 až 2020. Cílem práce je odhadnout vliv ekonomické svobody na mzdové rozdíly mezi ženami a muži v zemích OECD pomocí ekonometrického modelu a empiricky posoudit platnost hypotézy, zda zvýšení ekonomické svobody vede ke snížení rozdílů v odměňování žen a mužů. Ekonomická svoboda je znázorněna pomocí dvou indexů, které vydávají The Heritage Foundation a Fraser Institute. K odhadnutí ekonometrických modelů byl využit panelový datový soubor, který obsahuje data 25 zemí OECD od roku 2010 až 2020. Finální data set tak obsahuje 275 pozorování. Odhadnuté koeficienty proměnných reprezentující ekonomickou svobodu, sice naznačují, že tyto proměnné mohly přispět ke zvýšení gender pay gap, nicméně tento vliv se ukázal jako statisticky nevýznamný. Testovaná hypotéza o negativním vlivu ekonomické svobody na mzdové rozdíly mezi ženy a muži tak nebyla být potvrzena.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis examines the relationship between economic freedom and the gender pay gap in OECD countries between the years 2010 and 2020. The aim of the thesis is to estimate the effect of economic freedom on the gender pay gap in OECD countries using an econometric model and to empirically assess the validity of the hypothesis about whether an increase in economic freedom leads to a reduction in the gender pay gap. Economic freedom is represented by two indexes published by The Heritage Foundation and the Fraser Institute. A panel dataset containing data from 25 OECD countries from 2010 to 2020 was used to estimate the econometric models. The final dataset thus contains 275 observations. While the estimated coefficients of the variables representing economic freedom suggest that these variables may have contributed to the increase in the gender pay gap, this effect turned out to be statistically insignificant. Thus, the hypothesis tested that economic freedom has a negative effect on the gender wage gap was not confirmed.
