Qualitative Analysis of Processes of Solving Tasks in a Cybersecurity Educational Game

Abstract:

Kyberbezpečnostní hry představují atraktivní způsob, jakým studenti mohou rozvíjet své znalosti a dovednosti v oblasti kybernetické bezpečnosti. Hry probíhají v simulovaném prostředí, ve kterém účastníci plní jednotlivé úlohy k dosažení cíle. Jejich aktivity jsou zaznamenávány a mohou sloužit k analýze rozdílných postupů řešení. Porozumění rozdílných postupů hráčů významně přispěje k rozvoji a zdokonalení her ve výuce. Cílem práce bylo zorganizovat běh existující hry s alespoň deseti hráči a poté s nimi provést rozhovor, kde studenti byli dotázáni na sadu předem připravených otázek. Na základě kvalitativní analýzy těchto rozhovorů bylo zjištěno, jak hráči postupovali a proč se rozhodli řešit úlohy daným způsobem. Druhou část analýzy tvoří rozbor zaznamenaných příkazů a událostí, které v průběhu hry studenti vykonali. K tomu byly naimplementovány dotazy v jazyce Python, jejichž cílem bylo z daných aktivit extrahovat požadované informace. Výsledky kvalitativních analýz rozhovorů a aktivit jsou následně porovnány a na základě těchto výsledků jsou popsány vypozorované trendy. V diskuzi jsou uvedeny poznatky a doporučení pro studenty i návrháře her. Výstupy této práce přispějí k rozvoji a zdokonalení bezpečnostních her ve výuce.

Abstract:

Cybersecurity games are an attractive way for students to develop their cybersecurity knowledge and skills. The games take place in a simulated environment where participants perform individual tasks to achieve the goal. Their activities are recorded and can be used to analyze different solutions. Understanding the different strategies of players will significantly contribute to the development and improvement of games in teaching. The work aimed to organize the run of the existing game with at least ten players and then conduct an interview with them, where students were asked a set of pre-defined questions. Based on a qualitative analysis of these interviews, we identified how the players proceeded and why they decided to solve the tasks in a given way. The second part of the analysis was an investigation of the recorded commands and events that students executed during the game. In addition, Python queries were implemented to extract the required information from the given activities. The results of qualitative analysis of interviews and activities were then compared, and based on these results, the observed trends are described. The discussion contains findings and recommendations for students and game designers. The outputs of this work will contribute to the development and improvement of cybersecurity games in teaching.
