Experience of the Impossible. Jacques Derrida on Literature

Abstract:

Tato práce se pokouší přiblížit Derridovo pojetí literatury promýšlením zkušenosti dekonstrukce jako zkušenosti nemožného. Tento osobitý koncept zkušenosti, vyrůstající z Husserlovy fenomenologické filosofie a současně tuto svou inspiraci překračující, je společný Derridovým filosofickým textům i jeho statím o literatuře, z čehož plyne, že do značné míry problematizuje (avšak neruší) samotné toto rozdělení. Jakkoli se dekonstrukce jako osobitý způsob reflexe našeho myšlenkového a kulturního dědictví v celé jeho šíři vždy uskutečňuje jako konkrétní čtení či interpretace této tradice, tato práce se snaží ukázat, že chceme-li být Derridovu myšlení právi, nelze z něj jednoduše vydělit cosi na způsob aplikovatelné literárněvědné metodologie nebo teorie interpretace. Po stručném nastínění poststrukturalistického kontextu dekonstrukce (a zároveň její neredukovatelnosti na něj), následuje uvedení do problematiky fenomenologického pojetí zkušenosti. Interpretace ranějších Derridových statí Forma a význam, Síla a význam a Struktura, znak a hra v diskursu věd o člověku usilují jednak poukázat na Derridovo vyrovnávání se s Husserlovým odkazem a s myšlenkou (francouzského) strukturalismu, jednak naznačit základní obrysy gesta a zkušenosti dekonstrukce. Další kapitola se zaměřuje na místo a funkci literatury v celku dekonstrukce, tj. na vztah mezi obecným písmem a literaturou, dále na Derridovu kvazi-fenomenologickou definici literárnosti, na pojetí literatury jako "paradoxní instituce umožňující říkat vše" a na souvislosti literatury, etiky a "nadcházející demokracie". Závěrečné části se soustředí na hledání paralel ke zkušenosti a gestu dekonstrukce v českém filosofickém a literárněvědném kontextu a na zvažování síly i slabosti Derridovy myšlenky.

Abstract:

This paper tries to illuminate Derrida´s understanding of literature by considering the experience of deconstruction as the experience of the impossible. This original conception of experience, stemming from Husserl´s phenomenological philosophy while simultaneously transgressing this inspiration, is common to all Derrida´s philosophical texts as well as his treatises on literature, which results in considerable problems with (but not cancellation of) this division. No matter how much deconstruction - understood as a peculiar way of reflecting the whole range of our intellectual and cultural heritage - is always practised as a particular fading or interpretation of this tradition, this paper tries to show that if we want to stay loyal to Derrida´s thinking, we cannot simply single out from it any kind of applicable critical methodology or theory of interpretation. After a brief outline of the poststructuralist context of deconstruction (and the irreducibility of deconstruction to that context), an introduction to the issues of phenomenological conception of experience follows. The interpretations of Derrida´s earlier essays Form and Meaning, Power and Meaning and Structure, Sign, and Play in the Discourse of the Human Sciences strive to point to Derrida?s gradual coming to terms with Husserl´s legacy and the ideas of (French) structuralism. They also try to outline the fundamental gestures and experience of deconstruction. The next chapter focuses on the position and function of literature in the whole of deconstruction, i.e. the relation between general writing and literature, on Derrida´s quasi-phenomenological definition of literariness, on the conception of literature as a "paradoxical institution making it possible to say everything", and on the contexts of literature, ethics and "forthcoming democracy". The final parts concentrate on the search for parallels to the experience and gesture of deconstruction in the context of Czech literky theory and philosophy, and on the consideration of the potential strength and weakness of Derrida´s ideas.
