Quality of Life in Children with Epilepsy

Abstract:

Cíl: Hlavním cílem bakalářské práce bylo zjistit subjektivní vnímání kvality života dětí s epilepsií. Metodika: Výzkumný soubor byl tvořen 46 dětmi s epilepsií ve věku od 5 do 18 let, které byly dispenzarizovány v neurologických ambulancích v Uherském Hradišti a Zlíně a pacienti s diagnostikovanou epilepsií na dětském oddělení Uherskohradišťské nemocnice. Dotazníkové šetření probíhalo od 6. ledna do 16. března. Byl použit modifikovaný standardizovaný dotazník. Inspirací ke tvorbě byla zkrácená verze standardizovaného dotazníku Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory a dotazník Quality of Life in Epilepsy for adolescents - QOLIE- AD-48. Dotazník je rozdělen podle věkových skupin dětí od 5 do 7 let, od 8 do 12 let, od 13 do 18 let. Je zaměřen na vnímání kvality života ve čtyřech oblastech - fyzické, emocionální, sociální a školní. Výsledky: Výsledky dotazníkového šetření prokázaly, že děvčata vnímají kvalitu života hůře než chlapci. Nejhůře vnímají kvalitu života děti mladšího školního věku a nejnáročnější je pro ně oblast školních funkcí. Prokázalo se, že v interpersonálních vztazích nepociťují děti velké problémy. Oblast emocionálního zdraví se jeví pro děti nejméně problematická, oblast fyzického zdraví je velkou zátěží zejména pro děvčata mladšího školního věku. Závěr: Kvalitu života dětí ovlivňuje prostředí, ve kterém žijí, výchova, rodina, kolektiv vrstevníků a přátel. Výsledky šetření prokazují, že kvalita života dětí s epilepsií má značné rezervy a je ovlivněna ve všech oblastech. Pozitivní je, že terapie epilepsie u dětí má progresivní vývoj, že děti ji přijímají, užívání léků není pro ně problém. Taktéž interpersonální vztahy mezi dětmi s epilepsií a zdravou populací nevykazují velký propad. I přesto je potřeba více o této nemoci hovořit, dostat ji do širšího povědomí. Zejména sestry by se měly podílet na procesu informování rodičů a dětí o pomoci nemocným s epilepsií, ať v době záchvatu, tak v mezizáchvatovém období.

Abstract:

Objective: The main purpose of this thesis was to investigate the subjective perception of the quality of children's life with epilepsy. Methodology : The research sample consisted of 46 children with epilepsy in ages between 5 and 18, who were examined in neurological clinics in Uherské Hradiště and Zlin and patients diagnosed with epilepsy at the pediatric department of the hospital in Uherske Hradiste. The questionnaire survey was conducted from January 6 to March 16, 2014. A modified standardized questionnaire was used. The inspiration for this thesis was a shortened version of a standardized questionnaire: Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory Questionnaire and Quality of Life in Epilepsy for Adolescents - QOLIE -AD- 48th. The questionnaire is divided by age groups of children: 5 to 7 years, 8 to 12 years, 13 to 18 years. It focuses on the perception of quality of life in four areas - physical, emotional, social and educationals. The results of the survey showed that females with epilepsy perceive the quality of life worse than males. Those with the worse perception of quality of life were children of elementary school age and the most demanding activity for them are school functions. It has been shown that children do not experience major problems in interpersonal relations and the area of emotional health appears to be the least problematic. Physical health, though, is a huge burden, especially for girls of primary school age . Conclusion: The quality of life of children with epilepsy is affected by the environment in which they live, their upbringing, family, friends and the people surrounding them. The survey results show that the quality of children's life with epilepsy is affected in all areas. The positive is that the treatment of epilepsy has a progressive development. Children are accepting the disease and don't have a problem with taking the medication to treat it. Also, the interpersonal relationships between children with epilepsy and healthy populations don't show a big drop. In spite of this fact it is necessary to discuss the disease to create greater awareness.In particular, nurses should participate in the process of informing parents and children about the help for epileptics, whether at the time of the seizure or during the period between the seizures.
