Relationship between general, academic, social self-efficacy and study abroad in emerging adulthood

Abstract:

Dosažení pocitu vlastní účinnosti je jedním z vývojových úkolů v období vynořující se dospělosti. Tato práce se zabývá tím, jak mezi sebou souvisí obecná, akademická a sociální účinnost v tomto vývojovém období. Důvěra v úspěšné zvládání akademických úkolů a sociálních situací je pro vysokoškolské studenty, kteří se v období vynořující se dospělosti nacházejí, klíčová. V této práci bylo prokázáno, že mezi zkoumanými účinnostmi existuje pozitivní vztah – a tedy, že obecná, akademická a sociální účinnost spolu ve vynořující se dospělosti souvisí. Mezi muži a ženami nebyly nalezeny signifikantní rozdíly v oblasti obecné, akademické ani sociální účinnosti. Bylo také zkoumáno, jaký vliv má na dané účinnosti absolvování zahraničního studijního pobytu. Tato studie zjistila, že studenti, kteří studovali v zahraničí, skórovali v oblasti akademické a sociální účinnosti více než studenti, kteří tuto zkušenost za sebou nemají. U vnímané obecné účinnosti nebyly mezi zkoumanými skupinami nalezeny signifikantní rozdíly. Bylo také zjištěno, že délka a osobní hodnocení zahraničního studijního pobytu nemá na vnímanou účinnost výrazný vliv.

Abstract:

Developing a sense of self-efficacy is one of the developmental tasks in emerging adulthood. This study examines the relationship among general, academic and social self-efficacy in this period of development. Personal beliefs in managing academical tasks and social situations are important for college students for who emerging adulthood is typical. It was proved that there is a positive correlation between all examined domains of self-efficacy – the relationship among general, academic and social self-efficacy was found in emerging adulthood. There were not proved significant differences between males and females concerning general, academical and social self-efficacy. The impact of study abroad on self-efficacy was also examined in this study. It was found that students who had studied abroad scored higher concerning academic and social self-efficacy than students who had not participated in study abroad. Concerning general self-efficacy there were no significant differences between both groups. The study showed that the study abroad length and personal evaluation of study abroad is not a significant determinant of self-efficacy.
