Presence and food preferences of the Ural Owl (Strix uralensis) in the Boletice Bird area in 2015-2021

Abstract:

Kriticky ohrožený puštík bělavý (Strix uralensis Pallas, 1771) se u nás vyskytuje především na Šumavě. Cílem této práce bylo zjistit jeho výskyt v Ptačí oblasti Boletice mezi roky 2015–2021, zhodnotit změny ve výskytu po větrných disturbancích a vyhodnotit jeho potravní preference. Ke zmapování výskytu druhu byla použita metoda akustického monitoringu s využitím hlasových záznamníků. Dále bylo nainstalováno 92 hnízdních budek, u nichž z obsazených byly determinovány hnízdní zbytky. Ty byly následně porovnány s potenciální potravní nabídkou, která byla zjištěna odchytem drobných pozemních savců (Rodentia, Eulipotyphla) do sklapovacích pastí. Puštík bělavý byl zjištěn především v jihozápadní části Ptačí oblasti Boletice. Odhadovaná početnost je 35–40 párů. Populace je stabilní a výskyt větrných disturbancí měl mírně pozitivní vliv. Průměrná úspěšnost obsazení budek puštíkem bělavým byla 3,9 %. V determinovaných hnízdních zbytcích z budek po puštíkovi bělavém byli nejčastěji nalezeni drobní pozemní savci (přes 94 %), nejpočetnějším druhem byl hraboš mokřadní (Microtus agrestis Linnaeus, 1761) (32,7 %). Zbylou část potravy tvořili ptáci (Aves), obojživelníci (Amphibia) a bezobratlí (Invertebrata). Puštík bělavý se spíše specializoval na lov na holinách a tím i na určité druhy drobných savců. V práci jsou uvedena i doporučení, jak podporovat výskyt tohoto druhu.

Abstract:

The critically endangered Ural Owl (Strix uralensis Pallas, 1771) occurs in our country mainly in Šumava. The aim of this work was to determine its presence in the Boletice Bird Area between 2015–2021, to evaluate changes in the presence after wind disturbances and to evaluate its food preferences. An acoustic monitoring method using voice recorders was used to map the presence of the species. 92 nesting boxes were installed, at which nesting remains were determined from the occupied ones. These were then compared with the potential food supply, which was found by trapping small terrestrial mammals (Rodentia, Eulipotyphla) in mousetraps. The Ural Owl was found mainly in the southwestern part of the Boletice Bird Area. The estimated number is 35–40 pairs. The population is stable and the presence of wind disturbances has had a slightly positive effect. On average, the Ural Owl occupied 3,9 % of the nesting boxes. Small terrestrial mammals (over 94 %) were most often found in the determined nesting remains. The most common was a short–tailed field vole (Microtus agrestis Linnaeus, 1761) (32,7 %). The rest of the food consisted of birds (Aves), amphibians (Amphibia) and invertebrate (Invertebrata). The Ural Owl rather specialized in hunting on clearings and thus in certain species of small mammals. The work also contains recommendations on how to support the presence of this species.
