Semantic and orthographic adaptation of verbs borrowed from English : the role of the linguistic corpus

Abstract:

The objective of this bachelor thesis is to analyse verb borrowings from English in terms of semantic and orthographic adaptation using language corpora. The material starting point was thirteen substandard verbs that are frequently used among Francophone youth. An introductory theoretical framework defines the basic concepts of loanword theory and corpus linguistics. The methodological part focuses on a detailed description of the collection and sorting of suitable verb candidates for subsequent analysis. The practical part is divided into two main sections in which the verbs are presented in terms of the suggested hypotheses. The analysis of the meaning of verb loanwords confirms that the original meaning always narrows in French, however, the verbs can still be polysemous. In rare cases, loanwords can also take on a completely new meaning whose origin comes from English, but whose frequency is not nearly as significant as in French (kicker). The second analysis concerning the orthography of verb loanwords showed that the original English form with the French verb suffix (-er) is the most frequent form of spelling. Although there are other variants that are mostly adapted to the rules of French spelling (bouster, tchiller), their occurrence in the consulted language corpora is very low.

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je analyzovat slovesné výpůjčky z angličtiny z pohledu sémantické a ortografické adaptace pomocí jazykových korpusů. Materiálovým východiskem se stalo třináct substandardních sloves, která jsou frekventovaně užívaná mezi frankofonní mládeží. Úvodní teoretický rámec definuje základní pojmy teorie jazykových výpůjček a korpusové lingvistiky. Metodologická část se zaměřuje na detailní popis sběru a třízení vhodných slovesných kandidátů pro následnou analýzu. Praktická část je rozdělena do dvou hlavních oddílů, v nichž jsou slovesa prezentována z hlediska zvolených hypotéz. Analýza významu slovesných výpůjček potvrdila, že původní význam se vždy ve francouzštině zužuje, ale i přesto mohou být slovesa stále polysémní. V ojedinělých případech mohou výpůjčky nabýt i významu, který sice pochází z angličtiny, ale jehož frekvence není zdaleka tak významná jako ve francouzštině (kicker). U druhé analýzy týkající se pravopisu slovesných výpůjček se prokázalo, že nejčastější formou zápisu bývá původní anglická forma s francouzským slovesným sufixem (-er). Ačkoliv existují i jiné varianty, které jsou většinou přizpůsobené pravidlům francouzského pravopisu (bouster, tchiller), jejich výskyt v konzultovaných jazykových korpusech je velmi nízký.
