Power over the Childbirth

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá obrazy českého systému porodnictví a popisuje, jak je podoba péče ovlivňována soupeřícími soubory vědění. Popisuje, jak biomedicínský diskurs redefinuje procesy přirozeně náležející k životu jako předmět svého zájmu a ovládání, a jaké strategie používá k udržení silné dominance. Zkoumá snahu zástupkyň diskursu porodní asistence zvýraznit svůj vliv na společenské hodnoty, představy a postoje. Teoretickými východisky této práce je Bourdieuho koncept symbolického násilí, Foucaultovy koncepty biomoci a pastýřské moci, autoritativní vědění Jordan a koncept nerovného mocenského postavení dle typu vědění Reiger. Výzkumnou část práce tvoří analýza Masarykovy debaty a pěti rozhovorů s porodními asistentkami poskytujícími i péči u porodu doma. Práce prostřednictvím obsahové analýzy porovnává obrazy, které zástupci odlišných diskursů poskytují o podobě stávajícího systému, zkoumá představu profesního sporu a obrazu specifické skupiny žen volící porod doma. Rozkrývá genderovou konstruovanost pozic v systému péče a posun pozornosti poskytovatelů péče od žen k dětem v důsledku vzrůstajícího vlivu techniky na tomto poli.

Abstract:

This thesis examines reflections of the Czech obstetrics system and describes how the various forms of care are influenced by competing stocks of knowledge. The thesis describes the way in which the bio-medicine discourse redefines processes naturally related to human lives as objects of its interest and control, as well as the strategies applied by mentioned discourse to maintain its strong dominance. The work reviews efforts of the midwives’s discourse to enhance their influence on societal values, conceptions and attitudes. Theoretical bases of the thesis derive from Bourdieu’s concept of symbolic violence, Foucault’s concepts of bio-power and pastoral power, Jordan’s authoritative knowledge and Reiger’s concept of unequal power status by the type of knowledge. The research section of the thesis consists in an analysis of a “Masaryk debate” and five interviews with midwives, whose services include attending births at home settings. Using the means of content analysis the thesis compares concepts of the current system presented by representatives of the different discourses, examines a professional dispute concept and reflections of a specific group of women deciding for home births. The work discloses the gender construction of positions within the care system and the shift of care providers’ attention from women to children as a result of the increasing influence of technology in this domain.
