Malnutrition as a Consequence of the Economic Crisis in Venezuela

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá podvýživou ve Venezuele a zkoumá ji v souvislosti s ekonomickou krizí, která Venezuelu sužuje od roku 2013. Cílem práce je představit stručně historii Venezuely a popsat její ekonomický vývoj, charakterizovat příčiny a důsledky ekonomické krize, analyzovat situaci v oblasti podvýživy a na základě dat určit, jaká je závislost mezi úrovní HDP a prevalencí malnutrice. Diplomová práce je rozdělena na dvě části, kdy teoretická část byla zpracována na základě literární rešerše především odborných zahraničních článků a studií. V praktické části jsou potom prezentovány data z různých statistických databází, které byly zpracovány v programu Microsoft Excel do grafů a tabulek. Na základě výsledků lze říci, že je vysoká prevalence podvýživy důsledkem ekonomické krize a že existuje závislost mezi úrovní HDP a prevalencí, není však příliš statisticky významná. Výraznější je dle dostupných dat závislost mezi chudobou a prevalencí podvýživy.

Abstract:

This thesis examines malnutrition in Venezuela and explores it in the context of the economic crisis that has plagued Venezuela since 2013. The aim of the thesis is to present a brief history of Venezuela and describe its economic development, to characterize the causes and consequences of the economic crisis, to analyze the situation of malnutrition and to determine, based on data, the relationship between the level of GDP and the prevalence of malnutrition. The thesis is divided into two parts, the theoretical part was prepared on the basis of a literature research of mainly foreign articles and studies. The practical part then presents data from various statistical databases, which have been processed in Microsoft Excel into graphs and tables. Based on the results, it can be said that the high prevalence of malnutrition is a consequence of the economic crisis and that there is a relationship between the level of GDP and the prevalence, but it is not very statistically significant. More significant, according to the available data, is the relationship between poverty and the prevalence of malnutrition.
