BREXIT AND ITS IMPACT ON THE ECONOMIC PERFORMANCE OF GREAT BRITAIN

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá procesem vystoupení Velké Británie z Evropské unie a jeho dopadem na výkonnost této ekonomiky. V práci jsou testovány dvě hypotézy určené na základě předpovědí Kierzenkowskiho a kol. (2016), že brexit bude mít v krátkodobém horizontu za následek alespoň 3 % pokles HDP per capita Velké Británie a že brexit bude mít v dlouhodobém horizontu za následek alespoň 5 % pokles toho samého ukazatele. Hypotézy jsou diskutovány v teoretické části a následně testovány prostřednictvím metody Synthetic Control na panelových datech ze Světové banky a z Mezinárodního měnového fondu. V obou případech jsou zamítnuty, přestože je zjištěn negativní dopad brexitu (respektive rozhodnutí o něm) na výkonnost britské ekonomiky. Tento pokles se do roku 2020 pohybuje pod 3 %, a v následujícím období mezi lety 2021-2024 se v každém roce snižuje. Robustnost výsledků pak není vyvrácena provedenými kontrolními placebo testy.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with a process of Great Britain leaving European Union and its impact on performance of this economy. The thesis tests two hypothesis based on predictions of Kierzenkowski et al. (2016), that Brexit will lead to lower GDP per capita by at least 3 % in the short run and that Brexit will lead to lower GDP per capita by at least 5 % in the long run. Hypothesis are discussed in theoretical part and then they are tested using the Synthetic Control Method on panel data from the databases of World Bank and International Monetary Fund. In both cases they are rejected, although the negative impact of Brexit (respectively the decision about it) on performance of the British economy is found. This downturn is below 3 % until 2020 and in the following period between the years 2021-2024 decreases each year. The robustness of the results is then not refuted by performed placebo tests.
