Behavioural and physiological aspect of house mouse male social hierarchy – causes or consequences?

Abstract:

Do skupiny hlodavců patří velké množství druhů, které mají rozličné sociální systémy. Jsou proto dobrým modelem pro jejich výzkum. Objektem našeho zájmu se stala myš domácí (Mus musculus), známá spíše z biomedicínských experimentů, jejíž sociální život je ale velmi pestrý. Náš tým se již dlouhou dobu věnuje studiu dvou poddruhů myši a to Mus musculus musculus a Mus musculus domesticus, které se liší řadou behaviorálních parametrů. V této práci se zabývám rozvojem sociálních interakcí před nástupem agresivity, exploračním a emigračním chováním v dospělosti a zároveň vývojem hladin feromon-aktivních látek MUP v průběhu celé ontogeneze. Tyto poznatky jsou propojeny s výsledky předchozích částí experimentu, kdy jsme u poddruhů zjišťovali dobu nástupu dospělosti, čas rozvoje agresivity, míru agresivity a hladiny hormonů testosteronu a kortikosteronu. V části experimentu zde popsané jsem studovala fyziologické a behaviorální jevy doprovázející formování hierarchie. U M. m. domesticus jsou odlišné hladiny MUP mezi dominantními a podřízenými jedinci již před rozvojem agresivity. To by mohlo být odrazem fyziologických mechanismů, jenž jsou prekurzorem budoucí dominantní pozice. Formující se hierarchická pozice ale neměla zásadní vliv na rozvoj sociálního chování mladých jedinců, ani její stanovéní v dospělosti (dominant/podřízený) se neodrážel na exploraci. Toto jsme pozorovali shodně pro oba poddruhy. Zaznamenali jsme ale indicie naznačující, že M. m. musculus, který je méně agresivní, se v mládí jeví jako prosociálnější. Potvrdili jsme také poddruhově specifický typ chování v otevřené aréně, kdy byl M. m. domesticus aktivnější a méně vyhledával úkryt. Hierarchie, resp. sociální pozice, má ale zřejmě vliv na disperzi, kdy u domesticus je emigrace, pokud k ní dojde, spíše projevem podřízených jedinců motivována tlakem dominantního jedince, u musculus jde naopak o proaktivní chování dominanta. Tyto objevy doplňují soubor poznatků o divokých populacích myší a pomáhají nám tak pochopit procesy odehrávající se například v zóně kontaktů obou poddruhů, kde se nám otvírá okno do studia speciace. Výzkum chování divokých myší je velmi náročné, především v polopřirozených podmínkách, a i takové drobné krůčky, jako je tato práce, jsou součástí cesty k poznání nejen myší, ale i obecných zákonitostí formování sociálních skupin savců.

Abstract:

The rodent family has a large number of species with a different social systems. They are therefore a good model for the socio-biological studies. The object of our interest has been the house mouse (Mus musculus), an animal well-known from biomedical experiments, but whose social life is very ritch and interesting. For a long time, our team has been studying two mouse subspecies, Mus musculus musculus and Mus musculus domesticus, which are different in a number of behavioral parameters. In this study I deal with the developtment of social interactions before the onset of aggressive behavior, exploration and emigration in adulthood and the development of levels of feromone-active substances MUP during the ontogeny. These findings are linked with the results of other parts of the experiment, when we focused the onset of sexual maturity, the onset of aggression, levels of aggression and levels of hormenes testosterone and corticosterone. In here presented part of the experiment, I am describing the formation of hierarchy in subspecies, and behavioral and physiological mechanism accompanying it. In M. m. domesticus, we observed different levels of MUP between dominant and subordinate individuals before development of aggression. This disparity could be a reflection of some basic physiological mechanisms, which are precursors of the future dominant/subordinate position.However, neither have a developing social positions any a major impact on the pattern of social interactions between young brothers, nor final social rank on the exploration in Open field test. This situation is identical for both subspecies. However, there are idices for M. m. musculus, which is less aggressive, to be more pro-social in his youth. We also confirmed the subspecies-specific behavioral pattern in the Open field arena when M. m. domesticus was more active and less seeking shelter. Hierarchyo or more precisely the social position may have an effect on dispersal, where emigration in domesticus, if it occurs, is performed by subordinates, motivated by the pressure of the dominant individual, while inmusculus, it is ether the reset of the proactive behavior of the dominant. These discoveries complement the set of knowledge about house mouse and help us to understand the processes, which are taking place in the contact zone, where these two subspecies meet and hybridize, and where does the window to the study of speciation opens. Studying the behavior of wild mice is very demanding, especially in semi-natural conditions, and even such small steps as this work have its palce on the path towards understanding the general patterns of the social group’s formation in mammals.
