The New York Melting Pot: Assimilation versus preservation of ethnic identities

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská diplomová práce se zabývá životy největších etnických menšin v New Yorku a také jejich přizpůsobením se mainstreamové společnosti. Vyjma zkoumání etnických menšin tvořených přistěhovalci z Evropy, tato práce také nahlíží do problematiky amerických indiánů, kteří činí jednu z největších etnických menšin v New Yorku. V této práci jsem se pokusila zjisit, do jaké míry se obě tyto skupiny asimilovaly do mainstreamu americké společnosti a kolik ze své etnické identity se jim podařilo zachovat během tohoto procesu.

Abstract:

This work concentrates on the lives of biggest ethnic minority groups in New York, and their adaptation to the mainstream society. Aside from the investigation of ethnic minority groups created by European immigrants, this thesis also examines the problematic of Native American community, being also among the largest ethnic minority groups in New York. In this thesis, I tried to discover to what extent both of these groups assimilated into the mainstream American society, and how much of their ethnic identity they managed to preserve in the process.
