Linguistic analysis of Donald Trump's Tweets

Abstract:

The subject of this diploma thesis is the linguistic analysis of Donald Trump's tweets with a focus on three areas: condensation, his relationship with the reader and emphasis. A corpus was created consisting of 200 tweets by Donald Trump. The theoretical part consists of five chapters. The first deals with Donald Trump, his life and political career, his relationship to Twitter and his linguistic style. The second chapter deals with electronic communication with emphasis on Twitter. It discusses electronic communication, the history of Twitter, Twitter and politics and linguistic specifics of communication on Twitter. The third chapter deals with political discourse and political discourse analysis. The fourth chapter deals with previous research on the topic. The last chapter consists of definitions of selected terms. The practical part is divided according to linguistic levels. First, Trump's relationship to the reader is examined. The second chapter deals with the graphic level and examines, for example, capitalization, exclamation points, at signs and hashtags, as well as the repetition of phrases. The third chapter examines the lexical level, such as the use of adjectives and adverbs, abbreviations, etc. The fourth chapter deals with syntax, especially sentence structure, clauses and minor sentences. In the conclusion, the results of the analysis are presented.

Předmětem této diplomové práce je lingvistická analýza tweetů Donalda Trumpa se zaměřením na tři oblasti: kondenzace, vztah ke čtenáři a zdůrazňování. Byl vytvořen korpus skládající se ze 200 tweetů Donalda Trumpa. Teoretická část je tvořena pěti kapitolami. První se zabývá Donaldem Trumpem, jeho životem a politickou kariérou, vztahem ke Twitteru a lingvistickému stylu. Druhá kapitola se zabývá elektronickou komunikací s důrazem na Twitter. Je zde rozebírána elektronická komunikace, historie Twitteru, Twitter a politika a lingvistická specifika komunikace na Twitteru. Třetí kapitola se zabývá politickým diskurzem a analýzou politického diskurzu. Čtvrtá kapitola se zabývá předchozím výzkumem na dané téma. Poslední kapitolu tvoří definice vybraných termínů. Praktická část je rozdělená dle lingvistických vrstev. Nejdříve je zkoumán Trumpův vztah ke čtenáři. Druhá kapitola se zabývá grafickou rovinou a zkoumá např. kapitálky, vykřičníky, zavináče a hashtagy a také opakování slovních spojení. Třetí kapitola zkoumá lexikální rovinu a to např. využití přídavných jmen a příslovcí, zkratek atd. Čtvrtá kapitola se zabývá syntaxí, a to zejména větnou skladbou, souvětími a nevětnými výpověďmi. V závěru jsou přestaveny výsledky analýzy.
