Commented translation of an excerpt from medical text

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the translation of a text belonging to the medical field. The practical translation serves as a basis for the analysis presented in the form of a commentary. The analysis is related specifically to the translation of an extract from a patient guide to multiple myeloma. The introductory parts cover the stylistic aspects of the text, its position in the context of other medical genres as well as the circumstances and the specific features affecting the translation. The subsequent analyses are concentrated on the lexical units typical for the medical communication and particularly on those terminological aspects which are problematic for translation. The respective part seeks to find some general principles which could help with handling these difficulties within their typology. The final chapter indicates general syntactic characteristics and presents some elements which also affect the translation. Besides translation itself and the theoretical part, the glossary of terms from translated extract is the part of the thesis.

Abstract:

Le présent mémoire de master traite la traduction d?un texte relevant du domaine médical, et son analyse sous forme de commentaire. Le texte de départ est concr?tement un extrait du guide pour les patients, qui est consacré au myélome multiple. Les parties introductives du travail observent le plan stylistique du texte, sa position dans le contexte des autres genres médicaux ainsi que les circonstances et les spécificités liées ? la traduction de ce type de texte. Les analyses suivantes s?appuient sur le lexique caractéristique pour la communication médicale et elles visent ? décrire les difficultés terminologiques essentielles qui en résultent. Cette partie cherche ? trouver des principes généraux qui puissent aider ? gérer ces difficultés en fonction de leur typologie. Le dernier chapitre aborde le plan syntaxique, et présente des traits qui marquent la traduction. La traduction et le commentaire sont accompagnés du glossaire des termes tirés de l?extrait traduit.
