Internationalization of Ghanaian Agricultural SMEs in the context of strategic orientation

Abstract:

Firma musí učinit strategické rozhodnutí, aby mohla konkurovat nebo získat konkurenční výhodu, a internacionalizace je jednou z možností, které mají firmy k dispozici. Cílem této studie je prozkoumat internacionalizaci ghanských zemědělských malých a středních podniků v kontextu strategické orientace. Studie byla deskriptivní a průřezová a využívala smíšený výzkumný přístup. Součástí je také systematický přehled literatury s cílem určit ekonomický význam internacionalizace zemědělských malých a středních podniků s ohledem na strategickou orientaci. Ke kvantitativnímu sběru dat od tří set padesáti pěti (355) zemědělských malých a středních podniků v Ghaně byly použity dotazníky a bylo provedeno deset (10) rozhovorů. Data byla analyzována pomocí programu SPSS pro deskriptivní statistiku a pomocí programu Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modelling (PLS- SEM) verze 4.0 pro testování vztahů. Výsledky studie ukázaly, že podnikatelská orientace (inovace, proaktivita a autonomie) neměla významný vliv na proces internacionalizace ghanských zemědělských malých a středních podniků. Přesto studie zjistila, že podnikatelská orientace (ochota riskovat a konkurenční agresivita) podporuje nebo předpovídá proces internacionalizace ghanských zemědělských MSP. Studie dále ukazuje, že konkurenceschopnost malých a středních podniků významně a příznivě ovlivňuje úspěšnost jejich procesu internacionalizace, ale náklady a zákazníci nikoli. Z výsledku vyplývá, že pro malé a střední zemědělské podniky je zásadní, aby zvážily růst mimo svůj domácí trh. Proto musí být dostatečně konkurenceschopné, aby překonaly překážky internacionalizace a využily příležitosti pro malé a střední podniky na globálních trzích.

Abstract:

A firm must make a strategic choice to compete or gain a competitive edge, and internationalization is one of the options available for companies. This study seeks to investigate internationalization process of Ghanaian agro-based SMEs in the context of strategic orientation. The study was descriptive and cross-sectional and applied the mixed-method research approach. It also consists of a systematic literature review to determine the economic importance of agriculture SMEs internationalisation considering a strategic orientation. Questionnaires were deployed to quantitatively gather data from three hundred fifty-five (355) respondents drawn from the agro-based SMEs in Ghana, and ten (10) interviews were conducted. The data was analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) for descriptive statistics and Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modelling (PLS- SEM) version 4.0 for testing relationships. The findings of the study indicated that entrepreneurial orientation (innovation, pro-activeness, and autonomy) did not significantly impact the internationalization process of Ghanaian agro-based SMEs. Further, the study found entrepreneurial orientation (risk appetite and competi-tive aggressiveness) to support or predict Ghanaian agro-based SMEsinternationalization process. Also, the study shows that SMEs' competitiveness significantly and favourably affects the success of their internationalization process, but cost and customers do not. The result implies that it is essential for agro-based SMEs to consider expanding to external markets. Thus, they must be sufficiently competitive to overcome impediments to internationalization and seize opportunities for operating in global marketplaces.
