Transformation of the role of the eldest child in a family after birth of a significantly younger sibling

Abstract:

Práce je zaměřena na proměnu role nejstaršího sourozence v rodině po narození mladšího sourozence s velkým věkovým rozdílem. Funkcím rodiny a zároveň vztahům mezi sourozenci se věnuje velké množství výzkumů, jejichž výsledky byly shrnuty v úvodní části. Byl také vysvětlen fenomén parentifikace. Na tomto základě byla položena výzkumná otázka, zda lze nalézt konkrétní projevy fenoménu parentifikace v prostředí rodin se sourozenci s výrazným věkovým rozdílem. Kvalitativní výzkum byl veden formou rozhovorů s nejstaršími potomky. V rámci svého vyprávění uváděli retrospektivně své vlastní zkušenosti, pocity a nové znalosti. Respondenti uvedli projevy, které lze hodnotit v kontextu fenoménu parentifikace – přenos povinností, společné učení se, vyhledávání společných aktivit, obliba společného trávení času, velmi dobrý vztah sourozenců a v neposlední řadě vnímání sourozence jako svého dítěte. Je ovšem velmi zajímavé, že nejstarší sourozenci přenos rolí nevnímají, péči o sourozence berou jako samozřejmou. Fenomén parentifikace se tak v prostředí úplné a fungující rodiny stává něčím přirozeným a nemusí mít negativní důsledky, s nimiž bývá často spojován.

Abstract:

The work is focused on the transformation of the role of the eldest sibling in the family after the birth of a younger sibling with a big age gap. Lot of studies deal with functions of the family, as well as the relationships between two siblings. The results of the research were sum up in the introduction. Also the phenomenon of parentification was explained. On this basis the research question was stated, if it is possible to find concrete manifestations of the phenomenon of parentification in families with siblings with a significant age gap. The qualitative research was conducted through interviews with the eldest children. They shared their own experiences, feelings and new knowledge in their retrospective stories. Respondents reported symptoms that can be evaluated in the context of the phenomenon of parentification - transfer of responsibilities, shared learning, searching for common activities, loving to spend time together, a very good relationship with siblings and last but not least the perception of siblings as her or his child. It is very interesting, that the eldest sibling do not feel the transfer of parental role, they take the care of sibling for granted. So the phenomenon of parentification, in an environment of complete and functional family, becomes something natural and does not need to have negative consequence which is often associated with.
