Political Geography of the US Military Presence in East Asia

Abstract:

This diploma thesis discusses the political geography of the U.S. military presence in East Asia. The aim of this thesis is to determine why does this U.S. military presence persists in such a large way, and what is the self-defense capability of Japan, Republic of Korea, and Republic of China, in case of a significant U.S. military withdrawal. The chosen method is an explanatory case study. The chosen theories are the regional security complex theory, and the theory of "grand strategies". Mainly the existence of PRC and its efforts to change the status quo in this region are the main reasons of such large military presence. Moreover, the U.S. are at the moral crossroads - such military presence is largely expensive, but at the same time, the U.S. cannot afford to withdraw from Japan or Korea, otherwise they would look weak in PRC's eyes, and would betray its allies. Finally, even in the event of a significant military withdrawal from the region, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan would be capable of self-defense in the event of Chinese aggression. Thanks to this work, this work extends the theory of one of the grand strategies, namely, offshore balancing. On the other hand, economic cooperation takes precedence at the expense of the political one.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá politickou geografií americké vojenské přítomnosti ve Východní Asii. Cílem této práce bude zjistit, proč tato americká vojenská přítomnost přetrvává v tak obrovské míře, a poté zjistit, jaká je schopnost sebeobrany Japonska, Korejské republiky, a Tchaj-wanu, v případě významného stažení amerických vojsk. Metodou je explanatorní případová studie. Zvolenou teorií je teorie regionálních bezpečnostních komplexů, a poté teorie "grand strategies". Primárně existence Číny a její snahy o změnu statusu quo v regionu jsou tím hlavním důvodem americké vojenské přítomnosti. Nadto, USA stojí na morální křižovatce - tato vojenská přítomnost je obrovsky nákladná, ale zároveň si USA netroufají se stáhnout z Japonska či Koreji, aby tak nezradily své spojence, a nevypadaly slabě v očích Číny. Konečně, i v případě významného vojenského stažení se z regionu, Japonsko, Korea i Tchaj-wan by byly schopné sebeobrany v případě čínské agrese. Díky tomuto tato práce tedy rozšiřuje teorii jedné z grand strategies, konkrétně offshore balancing. Na druhou stranu, ekonomická spolupráce má přednost, a to na úkor té politické.
