Emotional Component of Religiousness

Abstract:

Hlavním cílem této práce je prozkoumání vztahu emocí a náboženskosti. K tomuto účelu jsou určena teoretická východiska, ve kterých se lze touto otázkou zabývat vědecky. V jejich rámci je vyjasněno jak pojetí vědy, jako formálního systému, tak i postavení religionistiky, chápané jako oblast zkoumání či vědní pole. Velký důraz je přitom kladen na interdisciplinaritu a přístup kognitivní vědy, pro kterou je komunikace mezi různými disciplínami příznačným rysem. V práci jsou představeny a zhodnoceny jak historické příspěvky, které tematizovaly vztah emocí a náboženskosti v minulosti, tak především výsledky současné diskuze z různých vědních úrovní. V tomto smyslu jsou zahrnuty závěry současných neurovědných výzkumů, psychologické teorie i koncepce zabývající se kulturou a společností, které různou měrou zapojují téma emocí a náboženskosti a ukazují jakým způsobem lze postupovat při zobecňování závěrů nižších úrovní zkoumání. Uvedeny jsou také argumenty proč se při zkoumání náboženství a náboženskosti tématem emocí vůbec zabývat. Předmětem práce jsou především nediskursivní složky náboženství, výsledky metod, které se studiem těchto složek zabývají i posouzení možností, které nabízí religionistice v rámci vytváření nových, či ověřování starých hypotéz a teorií.

Abstract:

Main aim of my diploma thesis is to examine the relationship between emotions and religiosity/religiousness. To be able to do that in scientific manner, I had to clarify theoretical presuppositions. Part of which was to refine what is meant by science (formal system) as well as to define position of Religious Studies within such science (field of study). I argue for the importance of interdisciplinarity and try to show, cognitive science as being prime example of that approach. Central part of my thesis focuses on both historical investigation of theories contributing to the discussion about religiosity/religiousness and emotions and evaluation of contemporary debates of this theme. I try to depict the main contributions of neurosciences, psychology and theories of culture and society, showing how the latest integrate the findings from more basic levels. I also point out reasons why to study the mutual emotion/religiosity relationship. The subjects of this thesis are especially non-discursive and nonverbal parts of religion and results of new methods that are studying them. Religious Studies has now a great opportunity to integrate those methods and results whether to verify old theories or to make new ones.
