The Social Functioning of Individuals with Asperger Syndrome: Navigation through the Social Relations

Abstract:

This work focuses on social functioning of individuals with Asperger syndrome, particularly on navigating Aspergers through the social relations. In theoretical part basic information about Asperger syndrome and its characteristics are presented. The work gives an overview of knowledge about the social functioning of aspergers – the qualitative impairments in social interactions, the desire for connections and also theories of failure in social functioning from the perspective of studies and autobiographical accounts written by individual with Asperger as well. The empirical part is based on qualitative research, which focuses on the experience of parents with Asperger’s children and their social functioning. Eight parents of asperger’s children participated in the study, text documents written by parents were processed using the content analysis. The research revealed several causes of problems in social functioning of asperger’s children, most significant of which are unconventional emotional responses, perceptual sensitivity, lack of motivation and lack of social competence. However, at the same time the results suggest the desire of aspergers to have connections. By the determining of the causes of problems, parents identified the navigation of their children with Asperger syndrome. The navigation includes several subthemes such as the need for correct diagnosis, the understanding environment, a suitable choice of school, autonomy and self- fulfillment of aspergers and translating.

Abstract:

Táto práca sa zaoberá sociálnym fungovaním osôb s Aspegerovým syndrómom (ďalej AS), konkrétne navigáciou týchto osôb v sociálnych vzťahoch. V teoretickej časti uvádzam základné informácie o AS spolu s jeho prejavmi. Práca podáva prehľad o poznatkoch o sociálnom fungovaní aspergerov – o kvalitatívnych poruchách v sociálnom fungovaní, o domnienkach vysvetľujúcich sociálnu nefunkčnosť týchto osôb, ale aj o túžbe po sociálnych vzťahoch aspergerov z pohľadu štúdií ako aj z výpovedí autobiografií osôb s AS. Empirická časť práce je založená na kvalitatívnom výskume, ktorý sa zameriava na skúsenosť rodičov s deťmi s AS a ich sociálnym fungovaním. Výskumu sa zúčastnilo 8 rodičov detí s AS, ich textové príspevky boli spracované pomocou obsahovej analýzy. Výsledky ukazujú viacero príčin problémov v sociálnom fungovaní detí s AS, z ktorých najvýznamnejšie sú prehnané emocionálne reakcie, zmyslová selektivita, nedostatočná motivácia alebo chýbajúce sociálne kompetencie. Zároveň ale poukazujú na túžbu aspergerov po vzťahoch a sociálnom kontakte. Na základe určenia príčin problémv, rodičia hovoria o navigácii svojich detí v sociálnom svete. Navigácia v sebe zahŕňa viacero podtém ako napr.: potreba poznať diagnózu, vnímavosť okolia a jeho pochopenie, vhodný výber školy, samostatnosť a sebarealizácia aspergerov a tlmočenie.
