Comparison of the use of printed and digital materials in higher education

Abstract:

Diplomová práce je věnována srovnání užívání tištěných a digitálních učebních textových materiálů na VŠ. Cílem výzkumu této práce je zjistit, do jaké míry na VŠ využívají studenti tištěné a digitální materiály, k jakým účelům je využívají a které faktory ovlivňují jejich užívání Teoretická část vymezuje a popisuje pojmy teorie o učebních materiálech, o pedagogickém textu a o učebnicích. Druhá kapitola se zabývá tématy učení se z textu a učení se z digitálního a tištěného textu. V poslední části obou kapitol jsou popsány některé z výzkumů, které poskytují oporu pro výzkumnou část Empirická část popisuje kvalitativní výzkum, který byl realizován pomocí polo-strukturovaných rozhovorů. Tohoto výzkumu se účastnilo šest studentů a čtyři absolventi vysokých škol. Při analýze dat bylo využita zakotvená teorie, která odhaluje, jaké učební materiály jsou využívány, postupy učení studentů, názory na učení se z tištěného a digitálního textu, zkušenosti s učením se z digitálního textu, faktory ovlivňující výběr tištěného a digitálního textu a míru užívání digitálního a tištěného textu Z výsledků vyplývá, že studenti či absolventi spíše preferují učení se z tištěných textů. Nejčastěji získávají k učení digitální učební materiály, ale učí se jak z digitálních, tak z tištěných textů. Faktory, které ovlivňují výběr textu jsou typ textu, množství textu, manipulace s textem - orientace v textu a zvyk.

Abstract:

The thesis primarily deals with the comparison of the usage of printed and digital learning text materials. The main aim of the thesis is to discover to what extent do university students use printed or digital learning text materials, for what purposes are they commonly used and which factors influence their general use. The theoretical part of the thesis defines and gives a general description of the concept of learning text materials, educational texts and textbooks. The second chapter deals with the topic of learning from the texts as well as the specifics of learning from digital and printed texts. The last part of the two chapters mentioned above describes the general research which provides support for the study. The empirical part describes a qualitative research, which was realized through a semi-structured interview. Six students and four university graduates in total attended the research. The general research theories, when applied on the collected data, revealed some useful conclusions particularly which learning materials are generally preferred, the approach of the student to learning and their personal experiences with studying from printed and digital text. The study also revealed several factors influencing the choice of the students and graduates between printed and digital text as well as the extent of use of digital and printed text. The results of the research show that university students and university graduates prefer learning from printed text materials when compared to digital text materials. Furthermore, the analysis shows that university students frequently obtain digital learning text materials, but they tend to learn from both digital and printed texts. The general factors that influence text selection are for example the character of text itself, the amount of the learning text, text manipulation and text orientation as well as the individual learning habits of the student.
