Readability of selected translations of biblical texts

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se věnuje kvantitativní analýze srozumitelnosti deseti vybraných biblických překladů, které vznikaly v průběhu 20. a 21. století. Z každého překladu bylo vy-bráno 5 textů (Janovo evangelium, Matoušovo evangelium, List Římanům, Skutky apoštolů a Zjevení Janovo). Cílem této práce je porovnat úroveň čtenářské srozumitelnosti překladů vybraných biblických textů. V úvodní části práce budou představeny jednotlivé překlady a jejich motivace v oblasti cílové skupiny čtenářů. Následně bude popsán analyzovaný korpus a nastíněn bude také koncept zkoumání srozumitelnosti textu. Další kapitola se věnuje interpretaci výsledků analýzy, které jsou doplněny úryvky z vybraných překladů. V didaktické části práce je popsán způsob implementace zkoumání srozumitelnosti do výuky českého jazyka a literatury. Dále je prezentován výzkum, který proběhl ve školním prostředí a měl za cíl shromáždit od žáků hodnocení srozumitelnosti jednotlivých zkoumaných překladů. Tato hodnocení jsou následně srovnána s výsledky předešlé analýzy.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with a quantitative analysis of the readability of ten selected Bible translations that were created during the 20th and 21st centuries. The total number of five texts were selected from each translation (the Gospel of John, the Gospel of Matthew, the Letter to the Romans, the Acts of the Apostles and the Revelation of John). The aim of this thesis is to compare the level of readability of translations of selected biblical texts. In the introductory part of the work, individual translations and their motivations in the area of the target group of readers will be presented. Subsequently, the analyzed cor-pus will be described as well as the concept of examining text comprehensibility. The next chapter includes the interpretation of the results of the analyses, which are supplemented by excerpts from selected translations. In the didactic part of the thesis, the method of implementing the investigation of intelligibility into the teaching of the Czech language and literature is described. This part also includes a study that was conducted in a classroom setting and aimed to collect a subjective assessment of the readability of the individual translations from the students. These assessments are then compared with the results of the previous quantitative analysis.
