Learners' Perceptions of the Effects of Gaming on Their English Development

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce zkoumá, jak studenti českých středních škol vnímají vliv hraní videoher na jejich angličtinu. Jejím hlavním cílem je zjistit vztah mezi hraním videoher a úrovní angličtiny z pohledu studentů – to, že hraní videoher může zlepšit angličtinu, již bylo potvrzeno předchozím výzkumem, cítí to ale samotní studenti stejně? Tato práce je zpracována kvantitativní metodou výzkumu a používá dotazník jakožto nástroj ke sběru dat. Cílem tohoto sběru a analýzy dat je nejen představit problematiku extramurální (mimoškolní) angličtiny v České republice, ale především zjistit, jaké názory mají studenti středních škol na hraní videoher ve vztahu s jejich úrovní angličtiny, jaké faktory mohou jejich názory a pocity ovlivňovat (například gender nebo věk), a zda se výsledky tohoto výzkumu shodují se zahraničními studiemi zkoumající tuto problematiku.

Abstract:

The main goal of this diploma thesis is to study how Czech upper secondary school students perceive the influence of gaming on their English development. The fact that gaming does improve English is already proved by previous research, however, do the students perceive it the same way? This thesis is analysed by a quantitative research method and uses a questionnaire as a tool for data collection. The goal of this data collection and analysis is not only to introduce the topic of extramural English to the Czech audience, but primarily to find out how the students perceive the connection between gaming and their English development, which factors might affect perceptions (such as gender or age), and to explore how the results of this research compare to the findings of the body of previous research in this field.
