Globalization and the threat of terrorism

Abstract:

Proces globalizace zásadním způsobem ovlivnil globální systémy. Narůstající míru vzájemné propojenosti je možno pozorovat nejen v ekonomice, ale i v komunikaci a sociální sféře. Fyzické hranice se stávají čím dál více propustnější a dochází ke zrychlenému toku nejen zboží a kapitálu, ale rovněž i informací a idejí. Bohužel, tyto změny s sebou nepřináší jen kladné dopady. Globalizace má rovněž svou stinnou stránku. Jako příklady můžeme jmenovat zvyšující se nestabilitu finančních soustav, rozšiřování chudoby, narušování suverenity států, nebo rozmach mezinárodního zločinu a zvláště globálního terorismu. Existuje určitá shoda, že globalizace vytváří příznivé podmínky pro šíření terorismu. Je však globální terorismus schopen ovlivnit globalizaci? Tato práce se pokusí najít odpověď na tuto otázku za využití teorie sítí jako teoretického rámce pro zkoumání vztahu mezi globalizací a globálním terorismem.

Abstract:

The globalization process has substantially affected the global systems. The increasing degree of inter-connectedness can be observed not only in economy, but also in communication and social realm. Physical borders become increasingly permeable and there is a quickening flow of not only goods and capital, but also information and ideas. Unfortunately, these changes do not bring only positive effects. There is also a darker side to globalization. Several examples can be named, such as increasing instability of financial systems, spreading of poverty, erosion of state sovereignty or growth in international crime and especially, global terrorism. There is a degree of consensus that globalization creates conditions favorable to the spread of terrorism. However, is global terrorism capable of affecting globalization itself? This paper will attempt to answer this question with the use of network theory as a theoretical framework for examination of the relation between globalization and global terrorism.
