Reproductive isolating barriers among sympatric killifish species

Abstract:

Reprodukční izolace mezi druhy často zahrnuje behaviorální rozdíly. Tato práce se zabývala rozpoznáním partnera a sociálními interakcemi mezi třemi druhy halančíků rodu Nothobranchius. Halančík tyrkysový (NF), byl studován v kombinaci s alopatrickým halančíkem Kadlecovým (NK) a se sympatrickým halančíkem ozdobným (NO). Cílem práce bylo odhalit význam olfaktorických a vizuálních signálů pro samičí volbu partnera a kvantifikovat tření a agresivitu mezi alopatrickými a sympatrickými druhovými páry. Za tímto účelem byly provedeny dva samostatné pokusy. 1/ Porovnání asociačního času samic NF s olfaktorickým a vizuálním stimulem od konspecifických a heterospecifických samců v laboratorních (akvarijních) podmínkách. 2/ Venkovní sledování vnitro– i mezidruhových interakcí alopatrických a sympatrických druhových párů. V pravidelných intervalech byla zaznamenávána všechna tření a projevy agrese. Během asociačních experimentů samice NF preferovaly olfaktorické vjemy svých samců oproti samcům NO. Mezi olfaktorickými signály NF a NK však nevykazovaly preferenci. Při vizuálním kontaktu upřednostňovaly oba heterospecifické druhy před svými samci. Pokud měly k dispozici vizuální i olfaktorické vjemy, nepreferovaly samce žádného druhu. Ve venkovních nádržích se heterospecifičtí samci třeli se samicemi NF méně často než konspecifičtí samci, ale samci NF se třeli s heterospecifickými samicemi stejně často jako samci jejich druhu. V jednodruhových nádržích probíhalo více agresivity než v ostatních nádržích. V nádržích s kombinací NF x NK převýšila četnost mezidruhových střetů nad vnitrodruhovými. Pro samičí volbu partnera se zdají být olfaktorické vjemy nejvýznamnější. Z výsledků asociačních experimentů a asymetrické frekvence tření heterospecifických a konspecifických jedinců plyne, že reprodukční bariéry mezi těmito druhy nejsou kompletní. Zvýšená agrese v jednodruhových nádržích byla nejspíš způsobena přítomností více samců a jejich tendencí si více konkurovat. Vyšší agrese mezi samci NF a NK může být způsobená jejich bližší příbuzností a podobností. Přítomnost mezidruhové agrese samců naznačuje, že si konkurují o zdroje, což mohou být i samice a reprodukční příležitosti.

Abstract:

Interspecific reproductive isolation often involves behavioural differences. This thesis focuses on mate recognition and social interactions among three species of killifish of the genus Nothobranchius. N. furzeri (NF), was studied in combination with the allopatric N. kadleci (NK) and the sympatric N. orthonotus (NO). The aim of this work was to test relative importance of olfactory and visual cues for female mate choice, and to quantify spawning and aggression between allopatric and sympatric species pairs. To this purpose, two separate experiments were conducted. 1/ Comparison of the association time of NF females with olfactory and visual stimuli from conspecific and heterospecific males under laboratory (aquarium) conditions. 2/ Outdoor experiment investigating intra- and interspecific interactions of allopatric and sympatric species pairs. All spawning and aggression displays were recorded at regular intervals. During association experiments, NF females preferred the olfactory cues of their males over those of NO males but showed no preference between NF and NK olfactory signals. During visual contact, they preferred either heterospecific species over conspecific males. When both visual and olfactory signals were available, females did not show any preference between the males. In outdoor tanks, heterospecific males spawn with NF females less frequently than conspecific males, but NF males spawn with heterospecific females as frequently as the males of their species. More aggression took place in conspecific tanks than in other tanks. In tanks with NF x NK combination, the frequency of interspecific conflicts was higher that of intraspecific conflicts. Olfactory cues appear to be most important for female mate choice. The results of association experiments and the asymmetric spawning frequency of heterospecific and conspecific individuals suggest that reproductive barriers between these species are not complete. The increased aggression in conspecific tanks was most likely due to the presence of more males and their tendency to compete more. The higher NF - NK aggression may arise from their closer phylogenetic relationship and similarity. The presence of interspecific male aggression suggests that they compete for resources, which may include females and reproductive opportunities.
