Julian of Eclanum and his doctrine of the free will of man and the grace of God

Abstract:

Tématem této bakalářské práce je myšlení Juliána z Aeclana, jakožto Augustinova nejvýraznějšího protivníka v tzv. pelagiánském sporu. Konkrétně se zabývá jeho naukou o lidské svobodné vůli a Boží milosti. Pro komplexní představení Juliánovy nauky je třeba nejprve nastínit jeho předchůdce. První kapitola tedy seznamuje s pelagianismem v pojetí Pelagia a Calestia, se zaměřením na jejich vnímání milosti a svobodné vůle a témata s tím související. Cílem práce je seznámit se s osobností a naukou Juliána z Aeclana prostřednictvím jeho děl a sekundární literatury. Důraz je kladem na polemiku s Augustinem, díky níž se Julianova nauka dochovala.

Abstract:

The topic of this bachelor's thesis is the thinking of Julian of Aeclan, as Augustine's most prominent opponent in the so-called Pelagian dispute. Specifically, it deals with his doctrine of human free will and God's grace. For a comprehensive presentation of Julian's doctrine, it is first necessary to outline his predecessors. Thus, the first chapter introduces Pelagianism as understood by Pelagio and Calestia, focusing on their perception of grace and free will and related themes. The aim of the thesis is to get acquainted with the personality and doctrine of Julian of Aeclanus through his works and secondary literature. The emphasis is on the polemic with Augustine, thanks to which Julian's doctrine has survived.
