Visual memes: Evolution of visual communication on the internet

Abstract:

V této bakalářské práci se pracuje s tématem vizuálních internetových memů. Tato oblast zájmu je z velké části tvořena příspěvky běžných lidí, tedy uživatelů na internetu, kteří pomocí nich vyjadřují své myšlenky či postoje na aktuální dění ve světě. Memy jsou taktéž tvořeny pro důvody humorné, tedy tvorba vtipů či jiného vtipného obsahu, který je dále sdílen mezi ostatní uživatele na internetu. Memy jsou popisovány a studovány pomocí obsahové analýzy a rozkladu jejich formátu, struktury a obsahu. Práce taktéž využívá pro svou analýzu kategorizační dělení memů podle autorky Limor Shifman v jejím díle Memes in Digital Culture. Práce se dále zabývá evolučními faktory těchto vizuálních memů a snaží se popsat, jak se v čase tyto memy vyvíjely a jakým způsobem se šířily mezi běžné uživatele internetu. Ve finální části se snaží zjistit, zda jsou tyto memy součástí digitálního folklóru a jestli ho pomáhají tvořit a rozšiřovat.

Abstract:

In this bachelor thesis is being worked with the topic of visual internet memes. This area of interest is mostly created by contribution of people, or users, who can then share their thoughts or attitudes towards what is happening around them or around the world. Memes are also created for the sake of fun, in other words, creating jokes or other funny content, which is after that shared between other users on the internet. Memes are being described and studied with the help of content analysis and decomposition of their format, structure and content. Thesis also uses categorial division of memes by author Limor Shifman in her book Memes in Digital Culture. Thesis furthermore contains evolution factors of these visual memes and tries to describe how these memes evolved through time and in what way they have been spread among basic users on the internet. In final part this thesis tries to find out, if these memes are a part of digital folklore and if they to create or extend it.
