Vulgarisms in Corpus of Songs of Rap: a Lexicometric Study in Dynamic Synchrony

Abstract:

The thesis named “Vulgarisms in Corpus of Songs of Rap: a Lexicometric Study in Dynamic Synchrony” is dealing with frequency and morphology analysis of vulgarisms in french rap music. The Corpus has been created as a part of a RapCor project. It consists of one hundred representative exemplars of songs. The first half of it was made during the period of 1990 to 1994 and the second one was made in the period of 2005 to 2009. The main theme of the theoretical part of the thesis is a determination of the term “vulgarism”, which is a neologism in the french linguistics. Furthemore, there are various divisions of vulgarisms made, based on various functional and word-making criterias. In the end of the theoretical part, there is a characteristic of french rap from the chronological point of view. An aspect we can call “verbal violence” is emphasized there, i.e. vulgarity in rap music proclaimed by mass media. The practical part of the thesis consists of a comparison of the two above-mentioned eras from the point of view of french rappers’ frequency and variety of vulgarity. Furthermore, it is dealing with a morphological point of view - frequency distribution of vulgarisms made by composition, derivation and borrowing from foreign languages.

Abstract:

Diplomová práce s názvem Vulgarismy v korpusu francouzských rapových písní: lexikometrická studie v dynamické synchronii se zabývá frekvenční a morfologickou analýzou vulgarismů ve francouzském rapu. Korpus byl vytvořen v rámci projektu RapCor na reprezentativním vzorku textů sta písní, z nichž jedna polovina pochází z let 1990-1994 a druhá z let 2005-2009. Teoretická část práce se zabývá vymezením termínu vulgarismus, který je v rámci francouzské lingvistiky neologismem. Dále představuje dělení vulgarismů dle různých funkčních a slovotvorných kritérií. Závěr teoretické části předkládané práce charakterizuje francouzský rap z pohledu chronologického, se zvláštním zřetelem k tzv. verbálnímu násilí, tj. k médii proklamované vulgaritě v rapu. Praktická část se zabývá srovnáním těchto dvou období z hlediska frekvenční a variační vulgarity rapperů, dále z hlediska morfologického – frekvenční distribuce vulgarismů vytvořených kompozicí a derivací a vulgárních výpůjček z cizích jazyků.
